Very attractive design. But it should be pointed out that Valve is incredibly paranoid about its trademarks (they have, believe it or not, trademarked the lambda symbol).

This should probably be checked to make sure that it's legal to post. - Aug 04 2006

Although quite glad that you mentioned that there was "another source". But you might want to not call it "original" since it isn't. And, if there is any question about the source, please don't repost it. Regardless of how "nice" it looks, it is still tantamount to stealing.

This wallpaper in question, however, is jimmac's which means it's likely all right to repost. I've located it here:, although I'm sure it can be found elsewhere. It is often titled "hax0r (original from jimmac)". By just calling this "HAX0R Original" it looks like you're taking credit :) - Sep 12 2005

And most of which with their own types of packaging. RPMs, apt-get, portage... and, heck, SOURCE CODE. Just which are you proposing here?

It's an interesting idea. But this is like getting everyone in the world to speak the same language and completely stop using their mother tongue (as opposed to being bilingual). Remember, too. In order to know how to uninstall something, you'll need to store that information somewhere which is dictating filesystem structure on top of packaging.

The idea just spirals out of control from there...

Personally, I use gentoo... but only when I don't feel like compiling by hand. - Aug 30 2005

You are incorrect, Sone. TOD asked for permission from TSA, and he was granted it. Therefore, HE has the ability to use these icons. Not you. They are not tied to the splash screen (so your argument of "update" does not apply).

This is why so many companies distrust the Open Source community. Freedom does not mean anarchy. We still have laws and we must still abide by them. Don't make us look bad in TSA's eyes - if this continues, TSA may completely refuse to allow use of their property in the future. And then where would we be? Even those people, like TOD, that want to do things "correctly" would not be allowed to. - Aug 25 2005

Please read the terms of service for this site. I do appreciate "serious" photography, but this site has had problems in the past with a bunch of horny nerds running around claiming "art" when there's no "redeeming" value (often the determination between "art" and "porn"). I like the "less decorative" yet "still colorful" designs. This one is perfect - subtle and useful.

I don't know if it's documented anywhere, but you can also install the files into "~/.kde/share/apps/metabar/html". Putting them in the global kde directory will change it cross system. Putting it into your user kde directory (~/.kde/) allows each user to have their own styles. - Jul 20 2005

The configure script does not look at the kde prefix in the environment (it assumes that you've installed kde in /usr/local/kde). I, too, use gentoo and it installs it in another location. You'll have to specify the prefix:

configure --prefix=/usr/kde/3.4

That should do it for you. I'm using it right now. - Jun 24 2005

Couple things:

1) posting a 1600x1200 picture: THANK YOU! (scaling down always looks better than scaling up)

2) I'm already using it as my background

3) if I have any criticisms, it's that you've placed the subject right in the middle of the shot. But that could just be me being picky - I still think it's beautiful. (photographers are big into the "rule of thirds", it allows a better framing of the subject when it's offset a bit).

Kudos. - Jan 30 2005

I'm not trying to be condescending... just want to be thorough (and I deal with "interesting" people at work, so I have to be VERY detailed):

How to mimic your request with kio_locate:
1. Open Konqueror and go to "Configure Konqueror..." (in the Settings menu).
2. Click on Web Shortcuts in the left icon list.
3. Click on "New..." to add a new (Web) Shortcut.
4. For "Search Provider Name" I inserted "local"... but use whatever makes sense for you ("My Computer", etc.)
5. For "Search URI" put "locate:/\{@}" (without the quotes) or "ilocate:/\{@}" for the case insensitive search. And, yes, that's a forward slash and a backward slash (or backward slash and a forward slash... I can never remember).
6. Click OK and then select your new "search engine" as the default from the drop down menu just below.

Now, when in "web" mode, the search does just what you want. However, for File Management it switches back. Anyone know how to add it in for both?

(I can't get spaces to work in my locate:/ searches, though. I'm probably doing something wrong).

Oh, and give props to the kio_locate folks! :) - Nov 13 2004
So - why recreate the wheel? I'm certain the kio_locate people would appreciate the suggestion. It's just another text widget (the difficult part) that would automatically prepend locate:// (the easy part) that would contact their kio_locate slave.

I'd love this extra functionality, too. I had been debating contacting the kio_locate people to see if they could alias "find://" for "locate://"... fewer keystrokes :) But a seperate widget would be wonderful (heck - why not go all out and include a drop down icon - like in firefox - where you could choose "local" or "google" or "altavista" or whichever!) - Nov 13 2004

Rule one around here: Don't flood the front page with multiple copies of the same wallpaper - even if they're different resolutions. People frown on it quite a bit and it's a good way to get "blacklisted" (or just automatically voted "bad" without actually looking first).

Best way to do it: add multiple thumbnails for the same wallpaper -- each thumbnail actually links to a different resolution. Typically, people put the largest resolution (the one they categorize the background in) as the download link, and smaller resolutions for the "thumbnails". Just tell us which is which in the description! Thanks. - Jul 28 2004

I'd have to get nitpicky.

Personally, I think it's great. But you want some feedback - so, please understand, that this may sound much harsher than it really is. Because I love it.

Right: number one - is the picture floating on the wall? There's no nail, tape, etc. Not a problem, at the bottom of the graphic; but the top part makes it look like it's hovering. Perhaps making the drop shadow smaller at the top and larger at the bottom might look "better".

Number two (and here's the ONLY real issue I have with the graphic), the poster "looks too nice". I mean, in contrast with the brick wall, it's a bit too clean/sharp. Perhaps sharpening up the brick wall - or blurring the posters words/edges might consolidate the images.

Otherwise - well done. I'm not typically a "bright" desktop fan. But I actually really like the color scheme. I only wish I'd had this on May 1st! ;-) - Jun 12 2002

I'm curious if you might be able to release a transparent/semi-transparent version of the penguin on the logo in a .png graphic. That way, users can set up their own gradients/colors to match their windows.

Anyone know what Conectiva thinks of all of this? I mean, we've seen their Gimp splash screen lose their logo. And now their KDE splash screen... And the Crystal Icons are being included everywhere.

Granted, impersonation is the highest form of flattery. But I'm curious their take on the whole "branding" situation.
