Yeah, agreed.

We just have to define how close you would be to the edge to fall under the "edge" exception. Is it 0 pixels from side of screen, 20? ...

Why am I asking this, just make the user choose. :)

If no one does it, I'll put it in some time mid June. - May 28 2006

Now if you could find a way to get the recursive/muti-folder input back...

Will do that in a couple of days. I'll need a small brake from studying anyway.

Also a small improvement would be to define the position of the center of the displayed image, instead of the upper left corner. that way, when swithching from an horizontal to a vertical image, the display would stay "in the same place".

Interesting idea. And quite easy to do, but... Will have to jerk the theme back and forth with each resize, which may be an issue if the image is next to the edge of the screen... Alberto, what do you think about this one? - May 28 2006
Chameleon Xcursors

Cursors by egregorion 39 comments

The is also a glitch with this set that makes the experience of using it even better!

If you click on a "form" field (text entry field on a web page) and your cursor is set to "autohide while entering text" in Control Center:
the cursor will actually blink 4-5 times, together with the actual text entry cursor and then disappears. Cool! I know it's not by design, but I like that. - May 16 2006

Cursors by egregorion 39 comments

The Uber Good:
I would call it "almost" major distro worthy. Amazing attention to the details! The very, very slight transparency is perfect. Simple, yet, very elegant. Finally, a good, simple cursor set, with a cursor icon that doesn't look like a traditional cursor.

The Slightly Bad:
I would play with the shadow offset and opacity more. In my opinion, the shadow is too much to the side, and visually moves the weighted average center too much to the lower right. I hope you get the script out soon, so I could tweak my set and not bother everybody else who likes it like it is. - May 16 2006

I would agree somewhat that the "new alarm" window is a bit busy, however, the current flow of

1. What to do
2. When to do it.
3. Repetition options

Is much more preferable from the multi-tasking point of view.

The only piece of info that is important for "reminder" type of alarms is - The notification of what to do. That is the only piece of information I have to keep in my brain. I would like to commit it to paper / text entry box while I still remember it, and clear the area of the brain immediately after.

"When to do it" is a logical outflow of the 1st step and does not require memory. Having the task on "paper" actually helps in deciding on the time and reminder options.

So, I would lean on the side of keeping the flow same, and on the same page

About the "busyness" of the interface: throw it out on kde-usability list. There are lots of eyes there. They'll figure something out.

(Example: reminder option relates more to the "time", than to "action" section.)

Sincere apologies for missing this bug. The theme was initially named "Palastik", so the problem is mostly due to my oversight.

As I can see, Beagle gets much more better propagation. Kio_lucene is nearly unknown.

One possible reason kio-lucene is less used - the name: difficult to remember and means nothing, spell and so on. I always have to guess/remember what the hell the name was. (lucien, lucern, lucent, lumen, lament etc.)

I use kio-locate cause it's, well "locate:/"

so far beagle is easier to recall than "cement", err.. "clement", err.. you know what I mean. - Aug 31 2005

System Tray 2 (with icon hiding support)

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by Dgege 165 comments

I can confirm the "over-sized hide button" issue in 3.4b1.

Changing to a different icon for the button makes no difference. On my (horizontal) kicker panel the button is sized about 5-to-1 (width to height ratio), with the height being the height of the kicker panel.

On a different tangent: Please! Please! find time and\or will to fix this. The icon hiding KDE ppl built into the standard system tray applet is a horrid joke.
It doesn't allow me to choose the icon for, or flip the location of the button. It doesn't support auto-hiding or priority list for icons as your applet does. It puts this horrid grey line after the "hide" button. Why did they even bother when all that had to be done is tweak your applet?

I look forward to your, working systray applet for 3.4. - Jan 24 2005

Why do you want to keep the install records (create one more package management system) when we can just use package systems built into each distro?

IMHO "make install"ing into fake root dir and building distro-related package is much easier for you to accomplish.

You can just add one more tab, where we can choose the script from the pulldown menu, (hopefully pre-guessed/remembered from previous selection). I wouldn't mind supplying script for Slackware. Others will do other distros.

The other benefit to offloading actual installation to a script is - Kinstall can be run as normal user. You only need SUID root for the scripts. - Jan 09 2005

System Software by isti 26 comments

I suppose one can emulate a fake root directory through --prefix and use this tool to build and install binaries there. i.e.:
configure --prefix=/home/user/fakeroot
make install

So, you can run Kinstaller as simple user.

Than as root run a script like (Slackware-related example)

(pass a pack name to it for $1 to work)
cd /home/user/fakeroot
makepkg $1
upgragepkg $1
mv *.tgz /home/user/storage/in
rm -r *
chown USER.users

Since one already can pass a options to ./configure through configuration tab of Kinstaller, all that's left is an ability to autorun a script of your choice after the Kinstaller is done. - Jan 08 2005
KickPim Patches

Groupware by duncan 6 comments

I missed an ability to open kmail from KickPim. It would show me the blinking mail icon, but to open Kmail for viewing that mail I have to go to "Start\KDE" button.

The simplest way for me to add kmail, was to alter the right-click menu.

< static const int POPUP_MAIL_APP = 304;
< m_popupMisc->insertItem ( SmallIcon("mail_get"), i18n("K&mail"), POPUP_MAIL_APP);
< KRun::runCommand("kmail");
< break;

Its not the best solution however. If I knew how to program I would make the particular mail account (the main, "left-click" view) clickable. May be add a "run application on click" option to "Email Preferences" > "Email Accounts" >

Since you seem to ba a little interested in tweaking KickPim, I was wandering if you can help me with this feature? - Jan 07 2005

Centurion theme for StyleClock

Various KDE 1.-4. Styles by suslik 2 comments

Thx for feedback... any feedback is good.

The Idea has merits and negatives:
+ Lowering hours down will make it easier to associate the two numbers as hours:minutes
- if hours and minutes are on the same level, I need a separator. If i plug (keep) the separator between them, it (a) gives you the clock face similar to all the other digital clocks;
(b) Increases the width/height relationship of the display.
a & b are two things I was trying to avoid.
- The clock is meant not to look conventional - it was an exercise in style, rather than function. (I was even considering to overlap the hours with minutes display. I am often aware of the hour, it's the minutes I am after :) )

However, I will be glad to create this specific variation for you.
Look up my email in the README and send me a picture (a mock up) of the face you want to have personally. The theme was designed to be changed very easily. Assuming you don't request totally new characters, You should have it back in no time. - Dec 02 2004

I DONT think ppl miss textual button because it was just better. I think it's because it was better than the implementation of the icon-based button.

If you perfect the icon-based button to allow slender, adequate, customizable "hide" button, no one will ever miss yer olde "Less Sign".

I can certainly live with a "flexible" icon-based "hide" button.

While we are on the theme of potential importing of a custom image for "hide" button...

It would make much more sense to simply link to ONE png (i.e. "1leftarrow.png"), and simply rotate it for all other instances...

BTW, I did like the textual button more as well. With hidden dividers on the kicker, it also provided some separation from other icons. I tried to go back to 0.3 after trying 0.4 but the demn thing is not going back... [scratching head] - Nov 27 2004
