BooKreader

Office Apps by atlanter 36 comments

Please rename this project since a project with the same name is already existing: http://unix.freshmeat.net/projects/bookreader/

I wanted to make klik://bookreader but couldn't do so since it would collide with the other project.

Klik interface mockup

Application Concepts by kasra23 13 comments

Hi, this is probono from the klik team. Thanks for your great ideas for the klik site. In fact, we have been considering a major redesign of the site for quite some time.

One thing that would be indeed a big step forward (besides the design itself) would be a hierarchical classification system for the applications, like "Internet > Browsers > Firefox" or "Graphics > Vector > Inkscape". Unfortunately, I don't know how to implement this without manually categorizing thousands of applications. Is there an existing classification system that actually makes sense?

As for the redesigning of the site, there is a couple of things we need to sort out on the klik server itself (e.g., the classification hierarchy system, more international package descriptions and a way to enter them if they don't exist yet), but then we're open to your suggestions. - Apr 09 2006

Is it possible to compile this statically, so that it runs on a decent number of users' existing systems out there? No one wants to mess up their production systems with unstable dependencies. Possibly c++ is more suitable to create binaries that actually run on users' systems than this type of application you need a PhD for to get it working... - Feb 03 2006

Kompile

This is a nice app, but unfortunately it only cures the symptoms not the cause:

- compiling takes a great amount of time
- compiling fails in most cases since there are always some -dev packages missing or very strange errors occur

For these reasons, I came to the conclusion that the end user should never need to compile anything, but instead just simply click on a link in order to download and run software instantly - without compiling or installing anything. - Oct 15 2005

Hi mayoso,

thanks for dataKiosk, the cmg launches on SUSE 10 but then gives the following error:

Maybe the wrapper should explicitly start the database?

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by probono 40 comments

klik already uses globally installed components, such as KDE itself. Hence, only components that are not commonly part of the base system become part of the cmg.

The main philosophy behind klik is "1 application = 1 file". Hence, plugins should be part of the corresponding application. GIMP, for example, comes with plugins, and they are all part of gimp.cmg. - Oct 01 2005

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by probono 40 comments

Correct, klik doesn't "install" in the classical sense. It doesn't intermingle an application with the base system. In fact, it is much cleaner - it doesn't even touch the base system. Every application is kept seperate at any time from the rest of the system.

As you said, this is ideal e.g., for testing.

But more than that, many people also like it as an everyday way of using software, because it "just works" and can't break anything.

Granted, you will have some libraries more than once - but you have that today already (OpenOffice.org and Firefox, for example, come with a complete set of libraries.) The transparent compression more than outweighs that, however: Most people actually _save_ space by using klik, as compared with a traditional install. With OpenOffice.org alone, you save ~100MB. And no, I couldn't notice any slowdown. - Sep 30 2005

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by probono 40 comments

Having cmg files read-only is a feature, not a bug: this way you can trust that applications cannot modify themselves, and the user can't accidentially break anything. (If you want to modify cmg files anyway, please read the klik documentation - it's easy.) - Sep 30 2005

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by probono 40 comments

Having 1 file per application (instead of 1 directory) actually has a lot of advantages:

* Applications are stored compressed at all times, you get ~50% hard disk space savings, which is quite a bit for applications like OpenOffice.org

* No need to unpack

* You can easily e-mail cmg files - Sep 30 2005
