Thank you very much for this breathtaking piece of art! Although it has "noir" in its title, it really brightens up my days! :)

I would like to know how you do these kind of images. I guess it takes quite some imagination, creativity and a high level of knowledge about programs like Gimp, Photoshop or others like that. - Apr 02 2020

I just noticed that the widget can read the fan speed and display it as well. But it adds a degree sign "°" to it. Obviously, because this widget's main purpose is to watch temperatures. :)

But if you make the unit optional, that is to be appended to the sensors values, and if you add some multipliers where necessary, you can make this widget a universal measuring tool. - Aug 02 2018
Very useful, thanks! One request, though: on a vertical control bar, alias and temperature could be displayed in one line. - Jul 18 2018

It's hard to believe that it's more then 6 years now since I discovered this nice piece of software, and it has worked well ever since. :-)

But now I'm facing troubles to make it work with one particular new account: the program does not recognize new mails, but there's also no error message. It's just like the account didn't exist.

The only difference between this new account and the old ones is the fact that Seamonkey and Thunderbird tell me that they are using "SSL/TSL" when connecting to the IMAP server, while the old accounts are said to use "SSL" only.

Could this really be the source of the problem? - May 07 2016
I was told about this application and straight away I fell in love with it. :-)

One suggestion, though: could you include support for monitoring the local mail spool, please? Right now, you either need to start a second program to check local mail or you need to start some local IMAP server to enable your application to check the local mail. I can assure you that the second possibility is working very well, at least on my machine, but there are cases in which one only has limited rights and is not allowed to install anything. - Aug 14 2010

You're right...ish. ;)

I would have expected this behaviour if I had set the proxy using KDE's system settings. But I didn't, I set the proxy in konqueror's settings.

To me, these were two different settings at that time: to my understanding the first one would effect all KDE apps of course, while the second one only should effect konqueror. At least that's what I have been thinking at that time, after I compared Firefox's proxy settings and the ones in konqueror. I took it that konqueror is a browser, in which I could set a proxy as needed, I didn't think that the brower's settings would effect each and every desktop app as well.

- Jan 04 2015
OMG!!!! The solution to this error is so simple, it makes me feel ashamed...

A few day's ago I used the web-browser konqueror and configured it to use a proxy for some testing purpose. But now this proxy is not valid any more, and guess what? Yes: yawp uses the same network setting made in konqueror!

After setting konqueror to connect to the net directly, yawp can also connect to the weather services again.

I think, either yawp should use its own network setting, or you should make a very, very, very big warning note of this, telling the users about this behaviour, so that others don't get fooled by their own stupidity, like me. ;)
- Jan 01 2015
Sorry to be the bringer of bad news, but yawp can't connect to the server(s) any more. It has been running smooth and well for quite some time now, but a couple of days ago it stopped renewing the weather data and when I try to search any city in the world it says "The applet can't connect to the server, try again later", regardless which service I try to use. I did not change anything to the applet, so I have no idea what is going on there. :( - Dec 31 2014
I think "configure", which generates the make-file, should be checking if all required libs are present, because otherwise building will fail. And I compiled lots of programs where configure did exactly that: it stopped and told me that some libs were missing.

Anyway, there is something odd here: yawp from the repo consists of two files: plasma-dataengines-yawp and plasma-widget-yawp. If I install those two, I get the crashes. I can install my own build (0.4.5), after I installed both of these files. But 0.4.5. tells me, it can't connect to the weather server. What am I missing there? - Jul 15 2014
> Your YaWP version is quite old.

That's why I tried the version 0.4.5 from this site.

> there should be some issue with plasma libraries - e.g. some dependency is broken

I guess so, but shouldn't the configure process check this before building the binary? That's what configure is there for, isn't it? - Jul 15 2014
Supplement: I downloaded the version from this page and installed it and it still keeps crashing my desktop, as soon as I try to find any location.

Furthermore, none of the weather services works any more! No matter which service and which city I try, I get the "location not found" massage. Sometimes I also get a message saying that the service could not be connected to. My internet is working, as you can see with this message. ;) - Jul 15 2014
Sorry for the double posting, it happened when I reloaded the page. :(
- Jul 15 2014
I can confirm the crashing behaviour, although I am using other versions: I'm running Linux Mint Maya, with includes YaWP 0.4.1-1, and KDE 4.13.2, both of which are the current versions in Mint's repository.

For the last few days the widget has been showing a two days forecast only, although I set it to 5 days. Today it even showed only one day. Because I thought the weather service has gone bankrupt or something like that, I tried to change to "", but regardless which city name I enter, none is found, even cities like Berlin are unknown. About 2 seconds after the message "location not found" the widget crashes and the makes the desktop crash as well.

Thanks for the answer.

Where is this plasma configuration file stored, that you mention? Is it a global file, so all users will have to use the same configuration or did you mean that every KDE version has its own configuration file?

If it is the latter, do you think it will be possible to get around this by making yawp using its own configuration file in some future version? - Apr 08 2011
I love this little widget. There's one thing that puzzles and annoys me, though: any time after yawp needs to be reinstalled, it also needs to be completely reconfigured as well.

I just upgraded my Linux system. I am using separate partitions for the system and for /home, so the user's data is the same as it was before. I had to reinstall yawp, because the old version didn't work on the new system any more. After reinstalling and launching yawp, I had to configure the locations and theme again.

Why is this happening? Why doesn't yawp find the user's data after re-installing? - Apr 07 2011

I guess, I am too stupid for this...

Your recommended way of "installation" goes like this:

wget -O - | sh -s

One line, agreed.

The downloaded script does this:

wget && plasmapkg -u plasma_gcal.plasmoid && rm plasma_gcal.plasmoid

Also: one line. (Even if it doesn't look that way because of the line breaks inside this comment box.)

So I guess I'll have to leave it to the world to decide, which one is more complicated...

- Mar 20 2014
Excuse my asking, but why do you use wget to fetch a script that launches another wget, which fetches the plasmoid?

Some applications do have problems, e.g. the preview window in Gwenview when browsing a directory. That's how I noticed about the wrong content in the first place: Gwenview can open the file and display the image, but in the browsing window you get the "unknown" image. Funny. - Feb 06 2012

Does the new version know about UTF8? I need a cd ripper that can encode the mp3 tags and file names using UTF8. Until now, Audex was not able to do so. - Jul 26 2011
This bug is still active: I am using Audex 0.72 and Lame 3.98.2 on Kubuntu 10.4 and the mp3 tags are completely unusable as soon as there are non-ASCII characters in it.

It would be best if it was possible to choose the code page for the id3 tags independently from the code page that's used by the system for the file names. (Like "Grip" does it.)

You said that maybe lame could be forced to use another character set. How do you do this and does it really help? - Aug 17 2010

Thanks for your help! I am half way through now.

I remember in former KDE versions there was an option to choose Aurora as windows decorator. This option doesn't exist any more and that's why I couldn't figure out how to install the theme. I guess Aurora has somehow been integrated into kwin itself.

I unpacked the archive and moved the contained directory to ~/.kde/share/apps/aurorae/themes/Dark-Translucent-arorae and I imported the QtCurve config like you told me. No I'm able to to choose the theme as a "window decoration" and I can also choose it when I open the QTCurve options.

But: I still don't get any transparency on any window.

I am running KUbuntu Lucid and I installed every recent and available update and KDE 4.5.1. Is there something I missed?

It is strange, but the problem vanished somehow. I really don't know what happened, but I removed the application again and reinstalled it from scratch. This time I was able to install it to both user's desktops without any problem.

I have to admit that I installed some other programs before I did this re-installation. It might very well be that some of the programs I installed brought some libs along that made the difference. (Although I would have expected "configure" to check dependencies before compiling the sources.)

Anyway: the device manager works perfectly now for all users on that system. :-) - Nov 29 2009
