What might make this more useful though is if you could present a restart option with boot images to select from. This is presented in KDM, but not in the logout screen. - Apr 08 2004

Also, although I understand this is a learning project, I don't quite see the practical benefit. I think most people would prefer to simply click/double-click a link on their desktop or kmenu, rather than run a shell script where the run through options. If a person isn't savy enough to define their own link, I could see this script being used to define one for them (i.e have the script generate a .desktop file for them). Other than that, I don't think most users want to sift through a dialog every time they want to use Konqueror. - Feb 28 2004

Here's the problem with that. On my system, "hostname -i" returns 127.0.0.1. I'm pretty sure that's not my external IP :-). The problem is that I use a custom hostname versus the one that my ISP assigns me automatically ("HAL-9000" if you must know). I have this hostname mapped to the loopback address, so that when my internet connection goes down on rare occassions X will still respond normally (otherwise applications load extremely slowly, as it's trying to resolve a hostname that has no entry in /etc/hosts, and no, I can't put an entry there as the auto assigned hostname changes from time to time). Anyhow, the point is, in some instances (i.e mine) the hostname has nothing to do with the external IP.
I would suggest the theme use something like the following:
program="/sbin/ip addr show eth0 | grep 'inet ' | cut -d t -f2 | cut -d / -f1"
It still has a trailing space in front, and I'm sure there's a way to get rid of that, but this is just what I banged up in a min. or so. In any case, it's more ideal than "hostname -i". Oh yeah, and looking at that sequence I just realized some people may be working with multiple interfaces (eth1, eth2, etc.). In fact, I have another system here that I use eth1, since eth0 is an onboard network device that has probs. Anyhow, maybe you could have the user specify from which device they'd like to get info. - Dec 30 2003

Just like the "computers were before my time" excuse. So you mean to tell me you were born before 1890, when Herman Hollerith invented one of the first electro-mechanical computers? Or in a broader sense, referring to any computational device, we have the abacus dating back to possibly 1000 BC. It was also common to refer to people who were experts at computation as "computers" all the way into the 1950's. We also have the first graphical interface, and the concept of hypertext links coming from that same decade.
Really the people who use these excuses are either lazy or afraid or both. They should just admit they're not willing to learn. If one is willing to learn, ley can overcome any ignorance.
Well, anyhow, that's the end of my rant. Mainly I'm talking about people like my grandfather btw. He commonly *brags* about how "I don't even know how to turn the damn thing on". My mother, on the other hand, can be frustrating with some self-imposed limitations (i.e she doesn't manage her own /home directory), but she's been willing to try out GNU/Linux, and is willing to learn anything if it's "shown", but like a lot of users, learns by rote, and gets annoyed when I try to explain anything in abstractions. - Nov 22 2003

If this is just a doctored image, maybe someone should try contacting that guy. I'm sure you could make a bit of cash off of McBride's mug, which would make for another great lawsuit ;-) - Nov 13 2003

Usually when we talk of something being glorified, we're referring to an entity, which would suggest that Nature is an entity. I honestly believe personifying nature is irrational, but then, I guess atheists believe the notion of any all-high intelligence is irrational as well. - Oct 25 2003

I got the idea for this wallpaper when I saw a similar concept in a wallpaper. It was a B&W photo of 1/4 of a face (eye and nose) with the eye remaining colored (blue). I used the airbrush tool to simply color in the whites with a different shade and it turned out all right.
So that's when I browsed around desktopia.com for other faces, and found this one, which seemed to me to fit as Chani. From there I used the KDE desktop tool to fade black over the face (I'm not that proficient with The Gimp, so I couldn't find an easy way to do it in there), and then colored in the eye. The text on the left is a single layer from a generated "Neon" logo (a mistake at first, from simply copying and pasting the logo without merging layers, at which point I found I liked this softer look anyhow).
If you don't mind this quick hack (made it since there's too few Dune themed wallpapers), then I may post some more in the future. I'm thinking of doing one with Jessica (if I can find a good matching face) with some dunes faded in.
Thanks for the interest :) - Oct 03 2003

CLICKAREA X=4 Y=6 W=83 H=25 ONCLICK="dcop kicker kicker popupKMenu 0"
To this:
CLICKAREA X=4 Y=6 W=83 H=25 ONCLICK="dcop kicker kicker popupKMenu 0,173"
That way the menu pops out at the same place each time, horizontally. Not sure if this would be the same for all resolutions (I run 1024x768), but if you just experimented a bit, you could find out and see.
Now, if a way could be found to incorporate auto-hide, I'd say your theme would be fully complete :) - Jun 20 2003

It is a nice wallpaper (I guess, if you're into that sort of thing), but copyright is a serious issue, and making a joke out of the whole thing isn't funny. - Jun 09 2003

People really need to think about licensing, before they just start randomly posting images everywhere.

Whoever posted this should make sure they contact Lucasfilm before distributing this, and in the meantime I'd suggest kde-look.org removes this content to legally protect the site. - May 28 2003

Linux gaming is becoming more and more viable as development companies and distributors realize the potential. Savage, for instance, is yet another game that is going to ship with Linux support. UT2k3 shipped with Windows and Linux versions, but not Mac, reflecting Linux's new place as the second most used OS, displacing Mac.
Of course, despite my skills, and my collection of games, I don't really consider myself a "gamer". I don't really *need* that hot new game as soon as comes on the shelf, so my occassional "cravings" are more than satisfied. My mother, on the other hand, is totally addicted to one game in particular (although she's spending less and less time with it), namely "The Sims". She has a Mandrake 9.1/Win98 dual-boot system, and I have her Mandrake desktop completely tweaked (Karamba, Slicker, custom X cursors), but I have done absolutely nothing with the Win desktop. The background is the default dull green, and cluttered with default icons from installations she never bothers to remove. I've noticed this subtle difference actually aids in her departure from Winblows.
Anyhow, in summary, Linux gaming is alive, and continues to improve, and in the mean time, if you'd like to break your addictions, try making your Win desktop less attractive to remind yourself that you're not there to have fun... just to play games ;) - May 11 2003
