osXBar

Karamba & Superkaramba by stefano 169 comments

Hey, this is pretty cool.

Minor problems:
-For some reason, it's not as smooth as I would like, it seems like there is a low fps, if that makes sense, my cpu is < 10% at idle (i've got lots of other things running too) and around 60-70% when i'm moving the mouse around and zooming. Cpu and smoothness look about the same with or without Fast Image Scaling.

-If I have a window near the bar, and then I move the mouse over an icon on the osxbar, so it's zoomed big, then move the mouse directly onto the window, the icon gets 'stuck' as big, and doesn't zoom back to small until i move the cursor back on to the background above the bar.

-Only my Konsole and one other program (DosBox) show up as running on the bar. The bar should automaticly add icons for all running programs I think. (I also have opera, gaim, xmms, kmail open)

-After a few minutes, it stopped zooming the icons...except for the panther looking X on the far right (which was the icon for my DosBox running program). All other icons would not move when I moved the mouse over them. But I could still click on them fine. Here is the log of the output (I cut the beginning of the log, it was just a bunch of Updated: -1, Loop, Loop, etc)

I'm running KDE version 3.1.3-1 on Debian unstable (installed from Knoppix CD)

The newest version of gimp now lets you combine your tool windows into tabs, makes for much less clutter.

While it's not the same as putting everything inside a container window, it is helpful.

Check it out at the new gimp website:

http://mmmaybe.gimp.org/

as of this message, the newest is 1.3.21

has tons of other useful things too...like rewritten interface using GTK2, a menubar appears at the top of the images (no more right clicking to do anything! woohoo!), many new filters and some new tools. - Oct 08 2003
SlickBar for SuperKaramba

well, you could always hit the tab on the sides of the kicker to hide it, or set it to auto hide, but i don't know exactly how to permanently turn it off.

Something missing from all the karamba bars so far is a status dock for programs that dock in it, for example, gaim has a plugin to put it's icon in there, when you click on it you get a menu of stuff related to the program (access accounts, go away, etc).
And i also like my kcpuload which puts a little graph of the cpu, though that can be done through karamba itself. - Aug 12 2003

I had the same problem. You need the python xml libraries. On debian, running the following will solve that:

apt-get install python2.2-xml python2.2-xmlbase

replace 2.2 with your version of python. (2.2 is the most common i think).

But yeah, this is one awesome bar. really slick ;-)
I wish I had something faster than my sad sad 350mhz and i'd run this full time. :-( - Aug 12 2003
