well, true enough...
...but: this flag combines the state flag of Arizona with the symbols used by the Societ Union. I can not quite see how this is glorifying either Arizona or the Soviet union as Arizona never was a part of the Societ Union nor was the Soviet Union ever part of Arizona. It is exactly this mix that shows that there is nothing nationalistic that prevents Arizona from being socialistic. - Jun 11 2004

exploited? well if you are Danish you certainly have been: with the deal the government made with them in December, Maersk will keep control of 80-90% of Danish oil in the next 39 years.
In 2001, the Danish taxation ministry came up with a report showing that one could get 6.9 billion extra Danish crowns for that year if one had taxation equivalent to toher countries. Instead, the government's deal, they get 2.3 billion extra. That means they are already there giving Maersk 4 billion Danish crowns. These have to be paid for by the Danish taxpayer. Of course, one could also have all the oil in the hand of the state and all the oil money could go into building up infrastructure and finance social welfare programs.
And the stuff about jobs: jobs aren't really all that great. If we can get the same work done in shorter time, we can shorten the working day and h=ave more time for doing cool stuff.
And by the way, what are those problems in Scandinavia, that you don't really want to specify? I think you are just some right-winger that really has no clue of how bad people have it in countries that follow the policies that they are advocating. - Jun 06 2004

sorry man, but amongst other things I am also a Danish citizen having lived in Oslo, Norway for a bunch of years. And yes, the standard of living IS simple the highest available on this planet currently for a mass population.
The problems that one does have like anti neo-facism in Denmark (the Danish People's Party) and Neonazis in Sweden a couple of years ago are not really related to any real economic problems that people have as a result of too high taxes
Try living in some fo the poorer areas of Arizona for example: no health care, mediocre education standards, and all the young kids that are being recruited to the military as cannon food as they don't have any other hope for themselfs.
But of course, Scandinavia is not socialism - there are still big capitalists like Maersk and Roekke thta exploit people around the world. It's just as close to socialism as any modern country has come recently. - Jun 06 2004

Ok, first of all, if you've read the capital, you'll know that one of the basic qualities of the freeing of the working class is that it is their own work and that it is supposed to stop alienation from the products one creates. That has nothing to do with letting a state or a party take over the role of the working class and take control of the means of production. Whether I am controlled by a capitalist in New York or a Bureaucrat in Mopscow does not make a whole lot of difference in terms of alienation.
In terms of oppression, as I tried to say before, you can not just count Americans and how they are treated by the US (although also many American have been persecuted over times). Instead, you have to look at ALL people that are in contact with the US state together.; it is not better for the US government to oppress someone who doesn't hold an American passport than to oppress a US citizen.
In matters of education: yes, I agree, it should be a revolution by the great majority (that could profit from a change of system) against a small minority of capitalists. And that is what one needs eductaion for. One of the means of doing that is to post wallpapers here and then start discussions with that. Another way is to send lots of communists to the US and sit around the libraries in all the small towns to discuss with the local high school students. - Jun 06 2004

sorry man, but the US is not much better. Yes, the USSR was a dictatorship, but what is the US now then with a nonelected President?
Also, I can post this not because my country has "freedom of speech", but because it has it for _some_ (which includes me) but not for others... like dissenting people in Iraq.
Think of the millions of people that were killed by the US in Vietnam, the overthrow of a socialist-like democracy in Chile in order to hand it to Pinochet...
Just because the Soviet Union misused the name "communism"/"socialism", there is just no other solution than real socialism/communism to the problem of the military-industrial complex under capitalism. - Jun 06 2004

I am sure any capitalist with respect for himself will use whatever system costs least in order to drive up the profits. Anyone getting a linux related job out of this will probably try to convince them that linux is the right thing. And I think it is the right thing for them to do.
I as a communists am however more interested in trying to get across the communist-scare and explain to people that the OS-production-model really is what Marx predicted would be the future mode of production which would be the main mode of production under socialism, but that a radical break with capitalism is neccesary at some point of time which is done by the workers of the capitalist companies taking over control over their own labor. Else any alternative mode of production will be crushed eventually by capitalists who seek higher profits (in this case: SCO, MS, etc.). I therefor think it is important not to copy everything Marx said, but certainly to use some of those insights if one wants OS to persist. - Jun 26 2003

yes of course some take that seriously. And some of us, like me, are even communists (me not supporting Che or any of the selfproclaimed communist states however). Try reading some of Marx... communism and "the dictatorship of the proletariat" look a lot like the way the production is controlled in the OS environment.
I think it would be better to remove all the "soviet-alike" symbolism (well the hammer&sickle) so that all flavors of communists can enjoy it (put something else in there if possible). Anyways: also with the hammer&sickle I think it is great! - Jun 26 2003

Geramik really looks cool! But there are some problems with the fonts. When starting gimp1.2 all the startup text is written on top of one another. And the fonts generally don't look as nice as they do in regular KDE. I am using debian/sid. - Nov 21 2002

wouldn't it be cool if all the standard kde-styles could include matching gtk/gnome-styles? They could be lying in the same style-file that one instally using kcontrol. kcontrol could then automatically set up gnome/gtk to use the same style (maybe have a check-box "don't use kdestyle for non-kde/qt apps"). Same applies to icon's. - Nov 14 2002
