For now 3.18 is the latest gnome-shell version for my FreeBSD OS.
But, may be soon, when I'll have some time, I'll test it on virtualbox...

To shrink title bar, create ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css with

.header-bar.default-decoration {
padding-top: 0px;
padding-bottom: 0px;
}

.header-bar.default-decoration .button.titlebutton {
padding-top: 0px;
padding-bottom: 0px;
}

in it, then save and restart GNOME Shell (alt+f2 -- type r and press enter). - Mar 12 2016

To move the window control buttons to the left side -- enter
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences button-layout 'close,minimize,maximize:'
