Mmh yes, there are specials characters in the name of the subtitles files. For now special characters aren't supported on windows with vlc lua extension. You have to set "Manual download" in config menu and use the link displayed to get this one I'm afraid. - Aug 25 2013

You copied the web page from github, not the actual script. Get the file vlsub.lua from inside the archive using the download link from this page or the "Dowload zip" button from github, and replace the file you created. - Aug 25 2013

Your version of the script getting the video from youtube is outdated. You can update Vlc (the script is included) or update the script only, the new version is here:

The problem don't come with this extension, it just retrieve the playlist, not the video. Maybe you have a version of Vlc that not include the script to get the video. You can get it from here:

I understood, there's probably a problem as the extension try to save the subtitles file. I just try the extension on Windows 8 and it works fine, but I noticed they put restrictive default rights to access file again, maybe that's your problem.
I need you to send me your debug log again but after you reproduce the error:
- you start vlc with the debug command like before
- try to download your subtitles again
- when the problem appear (the download bar progress stop), you can close vlc and send me the new debug log like you did

Weird indeed. I think openSubtitles send the full response but you get the first line only. I can't see the reason why. Do you have anything that could mess with your network, like a firewall, antivirus or proxy? Or maybe a very very low MTU? I don't think so, but maybe you noticed other problems that could lead us to the solution. For now it's a mystery to me. - Aug 10 2013

It seems the extension didn't get any response from the server, that's why you get this error. You should try again, maybe it was maintenance or something. I'll add a verification to avoid silent error like that. - Aug 10 2013

lua warning: Error loading script C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\extensions\vlsub.lua: C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\extensions\vlsub.lua:4: unexpected symbol near '<'
What happened, is that you saved the html page from github, not the actual file. On github if you want to access the real file, not the web page, you have to click on the button "raw".

Nope, still absolutely no error message, 2 possibilities:
- or you don't get the error log right from the beginning and doing so you skip the error message. That's probably the case because on my Vlc, the log always start with the version name and number, revision. So I updated the troubleshooting section with a new method that allow you to get the full log easily

No, it doesn't update itself, I'm gonna add this feature. For now you update it the same way you install it, by putting the file in the right folder.
And no, I didn't put the minor version anywhere so I guess you have no way to way to check it beside comparing it will the version on github, I'll also add this on next updates.

The extension use the standard function "fopen" through lua to write in files, if windows doesn't provide a pipeline to the network with this function I think there's not much to do.
But you can always configure "Manual download" in the config and save the file manually.

That's because there is specials characters in the path to your file. I modified the script so now you can use the "Search by hash" method in this case, but it still won't be able to write in this directory so you'll have save the subtitles manually. Maybe you should consider putting your videos in an other directory like :

VLC Playlist Parsers by exebetche 359 comments

Nope, the principle of vlc playlist extension is to search the related data to an item only when this item start playing and there is no way I know of to "pre-parse" the full playlist. If it run on a server maybe you can use the "http" or "telnet" interface extensions to start each of them manually first. But anyway I you want the playlist to loop you will face an other problem: the link to the video provided will expire so you also need a trick to refresh the link the 2nd a video is played (but it is not hard to do). - Jul 21 2013

So yes, it was supposed to download translations only if your change the option but I get mixed up with lua reference and didn't notice translation was erased if you save your config again, I think that's fixed now.
I also fixed the problem with the option list not translated ("Download behaviours" and "yes/no" options) and the forgotten error messages. Also english translation is now saved in "vlsub_conf.xml" as well as the other. - Jul 19 2013

Hi Mederi

_Show config_
Download behaviours display: I think this is fixed.

_Search translations_
I think it's an ssl certificates problem. I ran the test on an outdated xp version and had the same problem then I export the github related CA certificates with firefox and export them on windows using "certmgr.msc" and it works now.
Maybe just update Windows will do the trick as well. I also read that you can put your CA certificates in %vlcuserdatadir%/ssl/certs, that would be more convenient, but I had no luck with that (https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=52751&p=173652#p173640)

Multiple click needed to save config was probably to this bug as well.

_Use "c:\\vlsub" for conf file_

Nope, I don't store anything on the system root, that's not clean. You can set the "conf_file_path" (l. 53) with a custom path where the conf. file will be saved if you have trouble. Beyond that I'll wait for the Vlc team to fix the utf8 problem, if they feel like it.

_Translation files considerations_
The translation is stored in the conf. file ("vlsub_conf.xml"). I considered your solution but I don't like software saving a lot of file on my computer when I don't need them (translations or else). So I stick to one file only, with just the chosen translation inside. For now, the manual solution is to add the content of the translation file in "vlsub_conf.xml" between this tag:
<translation>
...
</translation>

Translation files are available here:
https://github.com/exebetche/vlsub/tree/master/translations

Maybe I'll provide a more convenient manual solution later...

Regards,
