The problem is caused by the latest version of libgsf (the version with kde 3.3.2) use the version of libgsf with kde 3.3.0 and KWord works fine - opening MS Docs - Jan 02 2005

KWord with kde 3.3.2 does not appear to be able to open MS Doc produced files. The problem seems to be kde rather than KWord - as files can be opened when using any of 1.3.3, 1.3.4 or 1.3.5 with kde 3.3.0.
