Hi,
I've been trying Codeine out, and it's quite nice.

The only thing that thing I can see that's lacking is support for external subtitle files (.srt, .sub/.idx, etc.). If you could add support for those, I think it'd have everything I need.

Note: at the moment, I'm stuck on 1.0 on Dapper (haven't bothered to compile 1.0.1 myself yet), so if such a feature was added, and merely left off the changelog (or if I've somehow missed it entirely), feel free to ignore me.

Otherwise, good work! :) - Jun 07 2006

I'll second this sentiment. I used to really enjoy turning on flat or Reinhardt icons (hell, I used to use them more than crystal); they (along with comix) complement some vector wallpaper quite nicely.

Unfortunately, these days I end up with crystal icons sprinkled in among them, which kind of ruins the coherence. It'd be enjoyable to indulge in occasional bouts of minimalism once again. - May 18 2006

Hi. What's the sidebar on konqueror in that shot?

Also, how do you get it to appear without the tabs that usually go along with the navigation panel?

I've seen many screenshots with that kind of setup, but I've never figured out how to do it myself. - Jan 20 2006

How does this help, exactly? I suppose more menus could be accessed by the top-left, but it's still not against a screen edge.

All I can gather that this would do is waste more space, because most of the menu bar would be blank (all but the very left side).

It doesn't have any of the potential advantages of the Mac menu bar (against a screen edge, so Fitts says it's easy to access; menus are always in a uniform place on the screen; saves a miniscule amount of space, which may be important to people with small monitors), so I don't see how it could be called a replacement for it. - Nov 16 2005

This is definitely an interesting app. I look forward to seeing where it goes. It does seem to be rather crash-happy at the moment, though (although, I suspect the kaffeine part might be to blame; it has a propensity to crash konqueror as well). Is there some place to submit bugs if we find them? Is there a home page? - Oct 02 2005

Hi. Nice theme.

It seems, though, that button hilighting is a little flaky. When I move the mouse over one of the buttons, it flashes, but goes back to its normal color immediately. If I continue to move the mouse over the button it flickers between the light and dark color.

Is this how it's supposed to be? I imagine it'd look better if the button would become lighter on mouse over, and then darker on mouse exit, if that's in fact possible. - May 30 2005

"IRC I believe crashed my computer. AIM would disconnect, but wouldn't display an error message."

Those sound like bugs I remember from like two releases ago. When's the last time you used Kopete? If they're still bugs, then you should submit bug reports (that's the only way Kopete can get better).

"The interface, bugs me (hard for me to distinguish text)."

I don't understand this one. Are you talking about fonts? You can have different fonts for different parts of the interface, you know...

"There are plugins in gaim (Off the Record, song away ), that aren't supported in kopete."

Plugins can easily be written for Kopete. Try filing wishlist items in the bugzilla, and they might get implemented. It's certainly much less difficult than porting all of Gaim to a totally different toolkit.

Incidentally, Kopete has a "Now Listening" plugin, if that's what you mean by "song away."

"I wish both could transfer files over the aim network though."

This is annoying, but it's slated to be done at some point, along with buddy icons for AIM and so on.

As someone else here said, Kopete needs more developers. I doubt any project to port Gaim to KDE (which would be a *lot* of work, by the way) would get enough developers to get anywhere very fast, and most likely any issues you guys have would be more quickly dealt with if those developers fixed/added new stuff in Kopete (not to mention that some of your complaints are out of date). Your time would probably be better spent encouraging people to work on Kopete, and filing bugs/wishlists for things you think need improvement. - May 22 2005

This is really nice.

The animation needs a little work, though. Rolling up is fine, but when it rolls back down, it appears to be drawn with a black background, and only refreshes with the proper background after the animation is done.

Other than that, excellent work. I look forward to any improvements you make in this theme. I wish there were more themes of this quality.

(I also wish karamba were threaded... I have this, weather and soundmania open, and animation is quite choppy in all of them, and when one hangs, they all stop redrawing... maybe I need a faster computer...) - May 20 2005

Hi, I'm not sure if this is where you want missing icon reports or not, but...

1) Remote desktop systray icon
2) TVTime (I always just copy the xawtv icon to an appropriate filename, so you could probably just do that)
3) Various digikam icons: (tag-events, tag-folder, tag-people, tag-places, tag)

I'd request a system-tray Superkaramba icon, but from what I've been able to gather, they hardcode that in the program instead of using something that's replaceable. So there's nothing you can do about that.

Great icons, as always. - Apr 16 2005

Now that KDE-look has a "KDM Themes" section, you might want to look into adding support for the "Get Hot New Stuff" library in KDE. I know the wallpaper chooser has support for it, and Kopete has support for downloading emoticons and chat styles, so you may be able to look for inspiration there.

Keep up the great work! - Mar 25 2005
It might be more appropriate to put this in the "System Administration" rather than the "KDE Components" section. All the other KDM configuration stuff (including configuration of the old-style interface) is in that section.

Good application, though. This is much nicer than hacking through kdmrc. :) - Mar 24 2005

This looks quite good, and even though it doesn't really fit with the way I work, I'll continue to install new versions to see how it develops.

Two comments:

1) Instead of using those green arrows for showing/hiding the sections, it might be nice to use actual icons from the current theme, if possible. The green arrows don't look right with, for example, Reinhardt icons.

2) The animation is rather flickery. I don't know how you draw things currently, but some double buffering might be a good idea if you don't do it already. If you could make it look something like Kopete's animations, that'd be quite nice as well. :)

Other than that, it's looking pretty good. - Mar 24 2005

One thing I'd like to request, as long is you're rewriting kdesu, is that you investigate including optional sudo support. Reading the bugzilla, it seems that the kdesu maintainers are either uninterested in providing this, or are interested but don't have the time/resources.

I'd really like to be able to totally lock root logins and only use sudo, but currently I can't do that in KDE (Gnome, or at least Ubuntu, has successfully done this, so you might look at their stuff for how to go about it).

If you can't get to this though, don't worry about it. It'd just be a nice feature, and probably an even better argument for replacing the old kdesu.

Cheers. - Feb 11 2005

Hi, I'm a little confused about your arguments. What features do you use regularly that you can only access from the menus? I don't use many advanced features myself, but I can't imagine anything I'd do that would require a full-fledged toolbox on the side at all times.

As for the toolbars having unused commands: you do realize that you can change what buttons are on the toolbars, as well as placement, and where text appears, correct? You can't put it where you have it in your screenshots, though, so that might be a concern.

I'm also unclear as to why you would ever want to change your buddy icon from a chat window. Isn't a buddy icon the same across a given account, and therefore shouldn't it be set in the configuration for that account? I suppose one could put an entire account configuration panel on the side of every chat window, but that seems like clutter to me, which KDE is oft maligned for, and I agree with the opinion to some degree.

I may have misunderstood your ideas, though, so please correct me if I'm wrong. - Nov 07 2004
