i hate being a license troll, but people - you seriously can't do this. It's illegal and unfair to the actual icon designers to combine different themes, released under different licenses, and release them under a single license - or even better - under NO license.

Tango-based themes are amazing and all, but at this point there are lots of ways for people to mix-and-match their own themes. You can't do it for them. - Apr 01 2007

you'd think Fedora could do better...compared to the icon art their competitors (novell, ubuntu, the kde project) are doing, you'd think they would have come up with a more pro-looking icon set. Bluecurve may be outdated, but it looks way more consistent and professional than this one.

Thanks for packaging it, though. You're doing a good service to the community, and I'm sure plenty of people will appreciate it too. - Dec 11 2006

Cool wallpaper. I have one suggestion - maybe you could make the stripe wider or the logo smaller? I think it would look better if there were some padding between the logo (at least 1/3 of the logo height) and the edge of the stripe. Good work - Aug 23 2006

Some things, like having a 1px dark outline, are important so the icon stands out from the background. Having different sizes is important so that the icon isn't a big blur when you make it small. The Tango standards are there for very good reasons, and I think that you shouldn't associate this set with Tango if you don't follow them. The icons here, no matter how nice they may be, are wholly incompatible with the set. - Aug 05 2006

The quality of this is really poor...there are SVG sources for Tux that you can use so there aren't scaling problems, and it is pretty obvious you just used a paintbrush to make the top hat/veil/pearls. It's a cute idea but I would never ever use it on my desktop because of the quality. - Aug 04 2006

I'm sure i'm not alone in thinking that nautilus is sorely lacking in features. Things like what you describe shouldn't be that much to expect, yet even awkward and ugly file managers (konqueror) or mildly evil file managers (explorer) do things that nautilus only dreams of. I hope developers catch on to this at some point. - Jul 28 2006

1) get the ubuntu logo in scalable (svg) format, scale it to the size you need, and use that. That way it won't have blurred edges and you can use whatever size you want.
2) use anti-aliasing with your text so it's not blocky - Jul 27 2006

Everything is too close together, and it looks cluttered You have the shiny foot (which looks pretty good), the word GNOME, and a blue dot. I don't see why the last two things are even necessary; you don't see apple's splashscreen having a large apple, the word APPLE in huge letters underneath, and a random dot, do you? Good design is all about balance and moderation. Ask yourself how many elements are enough to adequately show the meaning and the style of your art, and leave it at that. Otherwise it gets too complicated. - Jul 24 2006

This isn't really minimalist. It's kind of the opposite of minimalist. It's very busy - it has three title elements, two symbols, and two backgrounds, none of which really share any similar style characteristics. It feels like it gives off a strong sense that many things are happening at once (and on a computer they usually are), so if the idea was to be "minmalist", the artist has failed. - Jun 11 2006

Good work, but make sure that you align your icons to the pixel grid in inkscape so lines don't turn out blurry (ex. the text mimetype icons). Make sure that your 1px lines aren't on top of a grid line, but between two grid lines. - Apr 19 2006

I think the cel-shaded ubuntu logo in the background is too cool to be obscured by a login box in the middle. You might want to try moving it to the side.

Also, the font you use doesnt quite match the art, in my opinion. Maybe something sans serif? - Mar 28 2006

good work! This icon would probably be more useful if you released it to fit the tango size standards; that is, if you re-size it to be the standard 48x48 svg and create the 22x22 and 16x16 pngs to go with it, so that it can be easily added to the tango theme. If you do that, you might even submit it to the project and get it included. - Mar 17 2006

The problem you are getting with libpng is that in order for transparency to work, your background needs to be a png image. If your background is an svg, like the kde default background, then this error is thrown and transparency doesn't work. - Dec 28 2005
