I'm also hooked on Smooth Tasks. The crashing wasn't intolerable, but the resulting Strigi suspend made it so that KMail/Akonadi bombed.

cmake wouldn't complete - phonon includes or libraries missing.

some days it seems like the open source community is the only thing that works right.

Tried using Euphoria. Same thing happened.

Turned compositing off. Euphoria worked. And kcometen too.

I'll explore on Kubuntu or KDE to see if this is a known issue.

Kubuntu 9.04 (KDE 4.3 beta)

when screen locks, kcometen runs. The first time it runs, everything is normal...unlock screen dialog appears and password returns to desktop.

The second time it runs, kcometen looks fine as a screensaver, but moving the mouse to get an unlock screen dialog locks everything up. The only way out is a hard reset.

Is there something that can be done to avoid this?
