Heh. Running the full blown Ubuntu Gnome desktop with Compiz enabled on just 1.5 GHz + 512 MB RAM was itself pretty scary at first. But once I got rid of some of the cruft it runs pretty smoothly and fast now.

xPlanet works fine most of the time. It's only when I'm tinkering with the settings or when it's refreshing the images that it causes problems. I've got it with the clouds etc turned off and even with those on, most of the time it just uses around 500 KB RAM and 0% CPU. - Jan 05 2011

Thanks a lot, that was Very helpful.
I'll probably put something together this weekend, as you suggested I'll start with one of the existing templates.

OK thanks, that'll definitely help me for now.

It's not much of an issue on my desktop, but my laptop is a pretty old Toshiba, with a 1.5GHz CPU, an integrated GPU and just 512 MB RAM. It's still got the best LCD screen I've come across though. But OOo tends to slow things down. Plus watching full screen video with VLC also freezes when xplanet gets active. - Jan 05 2011

Would an indicator applet work for something like this- something that could let you change the theme, refresh the clouds, or more importantly toggle the special effects, or just exit the program etc.

Not saying you should put in that feature, I just want to know if it's possible. I can imagine a couple of situations where it might make sense, like when you're low on battery power or need to do some CPU/RAM intensive tasks for a while. - Jan 04 2011

Now I just need to figure out how to put together some custom themes(like maybe with my own backgrounds).
This is going on both my computers' desktops.

Definitely an improvement.

GTK3 Themes by emilywind 138 comments

OK forget it, I finally figured it out.

There was a Lucidity icon theme in ~/.icons/ left over from a previous version of Lucidity. I'd removed Lucidity from ~/.themes/ but didn't occur to me there would be one in ~/.icons/
That's what was messing it up for me.
<sheepish grin>

Sorry for any trouble I may have put you to, and thanks for the reply. - Nov 26 2010
Lucidity

GTK3 Themes by emilywind 138 comments

OK, here's what I'm using:

Lucidity 2.3.2- the deb package installed via USC
Configured by running "sudo dpkg-reconfigure gnome-themes-lucidity" in the terminal

Preferred icon set- Faenza, Faenza-Dark v 0.80, installed via Synaptic(from the Equinox PPA)

I've also tried it with the Humanity, Breathe, and Ubuntu-Mono icon sets; the result is the same- Lucidity Dark correctly inherits the icon theme, Lucidity does not.

Lucidity

GTK3 Themes by emilywind 138 comments

There seems to be a small issue with the Lucidity Icon theme on my system- it seems to inherit the non-monochrome icons from the GNOME Icon theme(the old 'ugly' ones) rather than whatever icon theme I specify. 'Lucidity-Dark' seems to be OK with the icon set I specify unless I leave it blank(to use the same icon set 'Lucidity' is using).

So far tried running "sudo dpkg-reconfigure gnome-themes-lucidity" and logging out and in with different themes(Faenza/Faenza-Dark, Humanity, Breathe and Ubuntu-Mono-Light/Dark)
Using the Lucidity 2.3.2 theme from the Ubuntu .deb.

Is that a bug or is it an issue at my end? - Nov 26 2010

Finally got the theme. I think there was something wrong with either my ISP or more likely GNOME-Look, since I got disconnected many times while trying to download the file, and finally had to use the DownThemAll extension in Firefox to get the whole file(had to resume 6 or 7 times to finish downloading the file). :D

btw, the the new folder icons seem pretty cool, looks good with a dark nautilus background.
Thanks - Oct 12 2010

Hey, thanks for responding so quickly.
I'm not quite sure what the issues with the scrollbars you mentioned are. I seem to have no issues there so far. I still think this theme deserves a better rating. :D

About the breadcrumbs in nautilus-elementary, just to make things clear, this is what I meant
http://s785.photobucket.com/albums/yy132/balaknair/?action=view&current=Screenshot-2.png

The outlines of the buttons are kinda blurred and not smooth especially in the rounded ends, looks pretty awful especially when in folders with long names

This really is a pretty good looking theme imo. A very good take on the lovely Finery themes, and blends in the new Maverick Radiance theme quite well.
The only thing which bugged me was the Nautilus breadcrumbs(the rounded buttons aren't to my taste- looks a bit unpolished and blurry, or do they look that way only on Nautilus Elementary?). Maybe you could make it more like the Victory themes' breadcrumbs(just the arrows)- probably the best implementation of nautilus elementary.

Well done though. Great theme. - Oct 11 2010

Still getting a 305 kb archive which then gives this error

"tar: Record size = 8 blocks

bzip2: Compressed file ends unexpectedly;
perhaps it is corrupted? *Possible* reason follows.
bzip2: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Input file = (stdin), output file = (stdout)

It is possible that the compressed file(s) have become corrupted.
You can use the -tvv option to test integrity of such files.

You can use the `bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover
data from undamaged sections of corrupted files.

tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now"

The download isn't working for me for some reason. I think I'll try it later after a session restart and clearing the cache.

Thanks.

GTK2 Themes by CruelAngel 13 comments

I already tried deleting the folders and replacing them. Didn't seem to make much difference.
You're right, the problem gotta be at my end, since this install has a ton of 'testing' PPAs, compiled-from-source packages and a lot of manual tweaks(I have no idea what all I've messed up), and is probably very different from a clean install.
But as I said, no biggie. I can live without the breadcrumbs(they're mostly eyecandy anyway, and the buttons are rather pretty too), what really matters is an overall pleasing environment, not too harsh on the eyes or distracting but not too bland/boring either, and above all should be usable with all the major apps. And for all these, I think this theme feels just right to me.

Thanks. - Jul 03 2010

The only thing I changed was the Font, to Droid and Liberation(at size 9,10) though URW Gothic(8) looks really great, I have a bit of trouble reading some stuff especially in transparent menus. Droid seems much more readable, especially when leaning back in my chair(away from the screen).

Man I find myself liking this theme better the more I use it. Great work, buddy. - Jul 03 2010

OK, that's probably the reason then.
I'm using Nautilus Elementary, so the breadcrumbs won't show up on my computer.
No matter, the rest of your theme looks awesome enough for me to stick with it.

The 'bubble' crumbs look pretty good though.

As for the colors, I think it's probably the first time I haven't changed the colors in a theme- your defaults look just right to me, blending in pretty well with the rest of my desktop. - Jul 03 2010

version you posted yesterday. Still no breadcrumbs, rgba(though the current theme looks fantastic with rgba enabled via Gnome Color Chooser).

I've seen it happen with a couple of others, where people have trouble updating the attached files in Gnome-look. So maybe you're uploading the correct file but Gnome-look is still pointing to the old one?

Anyway, even without native rgba and nautilus elementary mods, your theme looks just fantastic(especially the Ambient version). - Jul 03 2010

Very nicely put together- pretty and very usable, especially with RGBA enabled. The customizable colors work pretty well too. The only thing I miss is the breadcrumbs style for Nautilus Elementary.

Lyrics screenlet

Conky by dencer 339 comments

It's just that no one's really sure how much longer Screenlets will continue to be in the repos, especially since GNOME 3.0 is around the corner.
What's the likelihood that GNOME 3.0 will break the Screenlets framework or at least some of its functionality? Given that Uni Applets is currently active, I'd guess that it could work better with GNOME 3.
Given that the only two screenlets I use now are Lyrics and Impulse, I'd love to see these two ported over to Uni Applets.
I think though that Uni Applets won't be too different from Screenlets, so most Screenlets will probably work just as well in Universal Applets.

PS: nice job with 0.6.9, the safe minimize feature is neat.
Thanks. - Apr 15 2010

my favorite screenlet of all time. And it keeps getting better and more refined.
Really great work.

Are you planning to port this to Universal Applets, since Screenlets is apparently no longer being maintained?
I certainly hope you are able to do that without too much trouble. Also wish you luck with the problem with GNOME 2.30, hope you are able to work around it.

Wishing you all the best.

I loved Deviantdark's Hydroxygen icons theme, but there were a few small things that bugged me about it. Then I came across your theme, and it's the closest to what I'd call a perfect 'Human' based theme I've seen.

Fantastic work, and thanks a lot for sharing your hard work with the rest of us.

While I'm not questioning your reasons for returning to Windows, I'm really disappointed that you will no longer be developing for KDE. Kirocker and Basket notes are two of my favorite apps with a lot of potential, and to think that they will no longer be developed by you is disturbing.
Anyway, thanks for all your effort and best wishes for whatever the future holds for you.
