Pink-Floyd Ksplash

KDE 3.x Splash Screens by cado 10 comments

If that was the case, then it's all cool, but I think it is a rarity, especially for a lot of the images used in splash screens, wallpapers, etc, on kde-look.

Personally, I find it hard to believe that the oroginal imaged used in this splash is truly public domain/royalty free, but if it is, more power to all. :) Like I've said, I don't this to be an ass, etc, but because copyright, both ways, is a serious topic for me, as a writer and as a 'citizen' in the OSS community. - Oct 21 2004

Nope, just a coder and an artist (writing, not graphical) who has a deep respect for what the GPL, and other licenses, allow to happen for a community. That respect, however, should be returned to those artists who do not use the GPL, et al, in their own works.

I truly enjoy the kde-look website, because some of the nicest icons, windecs, etc, are here first. I'd hate to see this site get into trouble for hosting copyright infringing material. - Oct 21 2004

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by cjacker 45 comments

I'm still not believing this is real. If he had actual code, why would he only have a screenshot? *Very* little has changed with Kicker code from 3.2.1 to 3.3.1. Go and do a diff yourself, but here is the diff between 3.2.2 and 3.3.0:

# diff kdebase-3.2.2/kicker/core/kicker.cpp \
> kdebase-3.3.0/kicker/core/kicker.cpp
< // the item under the cursor gets selected. The single shot
> // the item under the cursor gets selected. The single shot
> int Kicker::maxButtonDim() const
> { return 2*iconMargin(maxIconDim())+maxIconDim(); }
> int Kicker::maxIconDim() const
> int Kicker::iconMargin(int iconDim) const
> { return iconDim/16; }
> bool Kicker::conserveSpace() const
> { return true;}

So, until I see actual code, I'm going to call BS on this. Maybe it's for real, but at the moment, I doubt it. - Oct 21 2004

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by cjacker 45 comments

That's because it's an edited image, not the real Kicker, nor even a modified Kicker.

And what he'd like to do would take a pretty huge editing of the Kicker code to even accomplish, since there is no current way to make an applet hide itself. Maybe a nifty feature, but making Kicker act like a WinXP taskbar would not be an improvement in my books, since Kicker already pretty much outshines WinXP taskbar.

I wish him luck, but he won't be able to do this with themeing alone. Until there is some actual code, I'll rate this with CherryOS. ;) - Oct 20 2004

Not even the AL allows you to use somebody else's photo in your work. No license grants the right to use another's work without explicit permission.

Under copyright law (at least here in the USA) you can only manipulate photos, etc, for your *own* personal use. Once you make a derivative, *unless* it falls into the parody/satire realm (and I'm pretty sure you'd agree this does not,) you can not distribute it.

I don't mean to be down on your work, because quite frankly, I think it's nice, but the fact remains, if we want people to respect our art, the GPL, etc, we as a community must also return the favor. - Oct 19 2004

Thank you. I really wish people would understand the License/Copyright thing. It's *really* not that hard to figure out: if you didn't create it, you can't use it in your own stuff, unless you get permission first. - Oct 15 2004

I could see something like this being used to study user desktop behaviors. If you know how the desktop is set up, you can see where they spend most of their time clicking for Menus, Icons, etc.

Actually, if this also took a screenshot of the root window, with panels/kickers/etc it could be even more useful.

I'd also like seeing stats like "How often does the mouse sit idle when the user is doing something (aka, not when the screensaver is on.)

Just me, but I find it interesting. :D - Oct 11 2004
Taskbar v2 (flat + thumbnails)

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by lucher 201 comments

Best version yet. I like the "window bgcolor for text" option.

I have a feature request/question:

I've always wanted a taskbar that would use all space for a button, and only make the buttons smaller when there was more than one task. Something kind of like Afterstep's task bar.

Does that make sense at all, and if so, is that even possible using QButtons? I thought about trying it (many moons ago) using clickable QLabels, but never got very far. (My knowledge of QT/KDE libs using C++ is very limited...) - Sep 23 2004

You can not GPL this. It contains copyrighted material that I have a *huge* hunch the legal copyright holders have not given the okay for you to use.

There isn't a license anywhere that would allow you to distribute this, simply for that reason. - Sep 20 2004

Tactics & Strategy by Andi 12 comments

Well, it is your app, so whatever makes you happy in it's distribution. I have to admit, it's very addicting to play for me. (I'm still trying to beat my 15 on the Novice level. Harder than the getting a 50+ on the higher levels, I think.)

The good thing is, if someone was so inclined, they could fork this wonderful game to make it more KDE-esque. I have yet to look at the code -- would it be possible to put the main game logic into a central lib that could then have different GUI front-ends built for it? Maybe it would not be worth it. lol

Again, thanks for releasing this. :) - Sep 16 2004

I just upgraded to the 7.7 series (KDE 3.3 on Gentoo) and the rounded corner and button color options seem to have no affect what-so-ever on the windec after I click apply. If I then close and reopen the windec control panel, the example of the windec is correct (rounded corners and all) but still nothing changes in the actual in-use windec.

Any clue? - Sep 07 2004

This is nice, but if you could adjust the jpeg compression a bit to higher quality, it would be better. There are some artifacts in the image, especially around the edges.

If he is licensing under the GPL, he *must* provide source if it's asked for. To do otherwise (deny the source (breaks the GPL). If the source is provided as hard-copy or on a hard medium (CD,etc) he may charge for material.

But these days, it's not that hard to share source online, so there would be little reason (read: none) not to have the source uploaded somewhere. - Aug 14 2004

You don't have the GTK+ Python module installed. Google for it, it's easy to install, and should fix this. I wasn't aware this was Python, so now I'll have to grab it just to look at the code. lol - Aug 11 2004

This is really nice. Easy on the eyes, and my fave distro. ;) Now, for my suggestions...

First off, get rid of the black border along the edges. For those of us who use a transparent panel, it looks a little funky. I use a Tiny-size transparent panel at the top of the screen, and the black edge, and the contrast between the blue there, makes any color text I try for the clock, etc, hard to read.

Second, a 1280x1024 version would be nice. ;) - Aug 11 2004
Idea: Re-designing 'Recent Files' / URBs

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by sgtpepper 18 comments

Actually, I think a pointer to a position in a file is interesting, and at least to me, innovative in regards to this. A simple "Restart" or "Resume" location of media files would fix your concern, I think.

Definately a much better "Recent Docs" proposal. I also don't use mine much at all, simply because it's not very helpful with the amount of docs and files I access in a typical work day. - Aug 06 2004

I've noticed one issue so far, but otherwise it's been a flawless experience. Anyways...

If you have a Window shaded at the time Kompose grabs it's screenshots, it only takes a snap of the background under the window. Also, if you have windows layered (overlapping) you get a copy of the window that is "on top" as well where it overlaps.

I've turned Passive Screenshots on, but it never seems to update the screens. It keeps them exactly the same as they are when it first grabs the images.

Still, I'm still happy to see it working so well for a 0.2 release. :) - Jul 19 2004

Cursors by dvornik 34 comments

Yup, doing them by hand fixed it. Well, what I did was this:

In my .icons directory, I only had my jimmac instaltion, with a symlink of default to the jimmac directory.

Using the KDE installer put the cursors in the correct place, but I'm not sure how it pointed them them. I just changed the symlink target of default/ to point to the Grounation/ directory and restarted X. All better. - Jul 18 2004

Cursors by dvornik 34 comments

Something funky. I use the KDE cursor installer (Preferences -> Peripherals -> Mouse -> Cursor Theme Tab) and they are put in the correct place. I select them, and it shows the cursor icons at the top correctly, but after restarting KDE, the only cursors that work (ie, replace the default X cursors) are the "left_ptr", "move", and "xterm". Over links, resizing windows, etc, are using the default X cursors.

Changing back to jimmac icons, and everything works fine in that theme again. Any clue on how to fix this theme? - Jul 17 2004

KDE 3.x Window Decorations by dralgebra 541 comments

Not too bad for a 0.5 version! This is really nifty and different. (For me, anyways.)

A couple of things I've noticed, not complaints, but an effort to help you improve it:

- Applying changes in Control Center do not take effect right away. You have to shade/unshae the title bars a few times -- on each of the open windows.

- Changing desktops does not change the titlebars, even if you do have the same wallpaper on each desktop. (Again, I toggle window shade/unshade to fix.)

- Even after clicking on a titlebar, switching focus to a new window, the new titlebar remains in "unfocus" mode.

However, once toggled, the windows look great. :D Great job.

Perhaps a silly feature, but if I may request: allow a toggle to turn off the window border on windows (both focus and unfocus if possible.) I think it would be nifty to have an unfocus'd window that is totally transparent, 'cept for it's Title text and buttons. - Jun 30 2004

No, I'm not asking for my usage.

You have it licensed under the GPL, but unless you own the original image, you can't do that. I see *way* too many copyrighted images put into wallpapers and then "GPL'd" (or other "free" license) which can't be done, since the wallpaper author has no rights to the original image. - Jun 28 2004

I would suggest, that unless you get explicit permission from nVidia, drop the icon from the windec. That is their trademark and obviously has some legal issues if you use it.

True, but sometimes, those two unusable IPs are nice to be known. Some settings, for instance, in our network dhcp database requires the *full* subnet, with host and broadcast address. It's stupid, I know, but we do.

So, perhaps instead of not showing those, maybe just mark them somehow to denote they are unusable. - Apr 28 2004
