Yeah... I know, something is missing... Thats why im working, whenever I can, on a new style, based on lipstik/plastik but with a more unique look. It will probably be ready soon.

For others who may be interested in Lipstik's future, I have a couple of updates sitting on my hd right now, but Im busy like hell these days, and dont know when I will have 15 minutes to sit down and publish...

As for the K Menu hack, its really ugly you know, and Im quite ashamed to publish it... But since I had so many request about it, I will probably put the patch on Lipstik's page with the next version. - May 13 2005

I dont know Fedora much, but if it is like it was before, in older Redhat's distros, please make sure you also installed kdelibs-devel before compiling. You will also need qt-devel or something like that... - Apr 03 2005

It would help if you tell what distro you are using. These problems are mostly related to configure not setting the right KDE base dir.

Find a program called kde-config on your system, then run this:
configure --prefix=`/path/to/this/program/kde-config --prefix`

/path/to/this/program could /opt/kde, /usr/bin, /usr/local/bin, etc.

Note: you must use ` not '

Have a nice day!

PS: I said its important to know what distro you use because some distros might be using some weird places to store styles, etc. Maybe someone using your distro will be able to help you. - Feb 27 2005

It would be too much I think, i want to keep the style fast, and adding animation in widgets that, really, dont need it would only slow down lipstik.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion! - Feb 27 2005

I will see what I can do, but for now I prefer to keep it simple.

Start Control Center,
go to :

Appearance & Themes -> Style

There will be a "Configure" button,

In the Lipstik configuration module:

In a group box called "Scrollbars and Sliders",
there is a combobox called "Slider handle size"

You can choose your preferred handle style there.

Hi, I understand your frustration, I had many problems configuring, many problems compiling, many problems running HAL. As it is now, I tend to think this software is a piece of crap. When I finally got it to run though, it was quite nice. Unfortunately, it is not stable enough for me to use it permanently.

Well, maybe this will help you build it (HAL 0.4.7):

Remember, im using Slackware, maybe this wont apply to your distro...

I use the kernel headers version 2.4.29, but it seems the fix also work with 2.4.27. I dont know about headers version 2.6.x.

In /usr/include/linux
find the file called fs.h,
then find the line beginning with:

#define BLKGETSIZE64 _IOR(0x12,114,sizeof(u64))

and change it to:

#define BLKGETSIZE64 _IOR(0x12,114,size_t)

I know, i know, changing kernel headers is not a "nice thing to do" TM, but as I saw many times in many forums, it seems to be a bug in the kernel headers, so... Well, maybe its not a bug there, but in HAL (more likely), but anyway, it makes it compile dammit!

Note: it also helps if you disable doc building... check configure --help. - Feb 03 2005

oops... I was not aware of this cause I use the "Improving KDE" patches with the translucent rubber band... I will look for a way to fix it, but right now it seems this option will have to go away... (I now understand why it was there but disabled in the original plastik code...) - Dec 01 2004

Do the author of Plastik wants these changes in his style?

It is absolutely not my intention to force any changes in plastik. I just want to play with it, see what others think, make sure I dont introduce new bugs, and then I will propose some of the changes I made.

In the end, as always with the incredible kde project, it will all fall into the right place, I believe.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your comments! - Nov 30 2004

Yeah, I know about #1, I will look into this soon.

What compiler?

Did you try make -f Makefile.dist, then configure, make... ?

Im not the one who added the option, its in plastik CVS HEAD version and its probably Sandro Giessl (plastik's author) who did it.

You must be right...
Its just that while i was first using the fix, gimp would make kicker crash everytime i saved a file... but that was most surely completely unrelated to "not drawing frames"... i put the warning there as a reminder that some weird things could happen... although, as you imply, thats quite improbable. - Oct 27 2004

The only that could scare some people might be the "colorful" gui... well not me, i like it...

By the way, great work... In 3 days of coding i did not reached half of what you did!

When working on the sidebar, i tried to remove the useless status bar at the bottom, but this seems to be generic code from konq main view that shows a status bar on all frames; sidebar is considered by konq like any other frame, thats good, but to achieve a "great look"(TM) there would be a need for a special handling of the sidebar frame... thats hard to do without breaking of lot of things...

Anyway, just observations from a fellow kde user striving to make the best working DE also the best looking DE... and with better usability along the way if possible!

Have a nice day!
