Thanks Keith,
I missed setting panel back, can not use horiz panel on my HP Pavilion
dm4 takes to much vertical space on this 14 in wide screen.

I agree with the xfwm prelight too, when I was working on it, I was
stumped that none of the default window manager styles had a prelight. Ended up downloading a few from here and low and behold there it was prelight.

Uploading the changes now,
thanks again, - Apr 04 2012

Thanks,

No, I looked over gtk3, when it first came out and decided
it was not for me. It is too restrictive and allows very
limited artistic imput.

I guess the gnome developers are going for a light, unified look with gtk3, mayhaps to catch a growing market, of low end graphics and the low end processor of
pads and phones.

I prefer gtk2 and the less restrictive and free style.
I like choice and I like themes, and themes come from
ideas and experimentation and sometimes lots of alterations to get the .... look....

Maybe, later those gtk3 developers will loosen their
choke hold and let that great css style cut loose.

Thanks Sam,

Many blurry eyed nights on this one.

Also, thanks for the heads up and the fix for the gimp ruler problem.

Confounds me why gtk3 does not use pixmap -pixbuf engine.
Without pixmap there is no art involved other than color book art.

Well, at least we have choice with Linux,
Just spent a few days drilling down removing gtk3 dependencies.
Had to completely remove all my gnome apps.
Yeah, openbox does not care what I run, it runs what I tell it.
Replaced gnome apps with xfce, lxde, kde and independents.
Had to rerun qt config a couple of times to flush the gtk3 settings out of my kde apps and vlc player.

Am now back with completely updated Arch and looking
good with gtk2 once again.

And all is right in my little world ;) - Jul 11 2011

Sam,
Glad you like the gtkrc file. I keep updating it everytime, I create a new theme trying to get everything working in sync.

That, comboxmenu is a problem that has, also stumped me. I have tried setting it like the menubar,
we can change text colors there. It did not work always reverts to fg color and selected fg color.
Maybe If you move it up to the default section, I never tried that, just an idea.

In a serious funk right now, I use Arch and just did
a system upgrade that included gtk3, what a dissapointment for us themers. Well, you get to choose colors, the only thing I see being created is
checkboxes perhaps others can be created also
but I haven't seen anything different in any of the
gtk3 themes so far. All the work of the gtk2 theme
is ignored in gnome games they now use gtk3. Which reverts to an ugly default setting if you do not have a gtk3 file.

I might just do a gtk3 removal and see what develops later.

Great sig, if it aint broke dont fix it!

Coal,
Here is the answer.

They gave me comfort in the summer: Shade.

a sense of renewal in the spring: Buds.

raw beauty in the fall: Colorful Leaves.

now warmth in winter: Firewood.

The circle of life.

Trees: a Basswood and Silver Maple both ancient, close to 4 foot in diameter that started to loose massive limbs during wind storms the past few years.

Saftey concerns, and maybe some compassion for their digression..... Neither gun or dogs,
but big black carpenter ants , grubs and such.
And finally, just me and my chainsaw.

Yeah, I miss them and put a memorial sticker in the menu to honor them. And a earthy zen theme to surrond them. - Apr 30 2011

Metal'n'Wood Theme

GTK2 Themes by wmk69 11 comments

I Favor the Metal'n'Wood-Alt. I like the wood inset in the metal
button look.. I like your check buttons.
Most of all I like the notebook-tab sculpture look of the Alternate theme. It really shines with some apps like
Osmo, gtkperf, I bet It would look good with tabbed PCManFM.

Good = starting your theme from terminal shows no errors.

The gtkrc file is nice, I imediately knew you had done alot
of experimenting and hard work.

The big picture , I can not say , if it is better or not, I believe
it has more with tunning to the engine than just saying
less is better in this case.

I can tell you If you want a fast or light theme a small and simplified arrow will gain you 4 to 5 seconds with
gtkperf.

I like efficiency but am not willing to give up art..
throwing the Simplified word around seems to be
hip., but I also want choice and pixmap engine gives
you both.

Anyway, thanks this one will work nicely with at least
4 different wood- steampunk e-17 shell themes.

keep doing what your doing it is looking good.

GTK2 Themes by Padster 95 comments

Padster,
Yes, but If I have learned one way, there are always other ways, You or
Another may arrive with a better easier
way. Here are two pixmap ways.

this is the way I do it. See
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/ColdSteel?content=117510

download and look at text entrys in
Shadows folders. I set them in slight
color gradient and used that for both
entries, kind of a middle ground. Now I will probably go back and
create two separate background entries, one for toolbar and one for spin.

But... you could also look at Glossy P
theme here
http://art.gnome.org/themes/gtk2/571

The text entry here has transparency on
the outside of curve.
The theme uses different base[NORMAL]
colors at entry and default
to get around restrictions.
It looks very nice, however I do not
believe this would work with a gradient
toolbar, just a flat color. It may
suit your theme and gives little
explanations which helps the learning curve.

And there is nothing wrong with using
an engine like murrine, clearlooks, etc.
to handle a style or two or set as
default and use pixmap engine to do specific styles that gives you your own
art-look.

Anyway...all the best to you.
- Jan 27 2011
London Smoke

GTK2 Themes by Padster 95 comments

I am pretty sure they use the same process only you do not see the dirty part, they do that with their
engine (application)/coding.
I am guessing murrine engine
looks to match the rounded style your going for and gives you a little more flexibility to tweek the roundness and such. I have seen themes with 3-4 different engines used, it is all a big possibility

Here is an example of letting an
engine handle a style in a theme
with pixmap as default engine.

style "optionmenu"
{

xthickness = 2
ythickness = 2

GtkWidget::interior_focus = 0

engine "clearlooks"
{
animation = TRUE
style = GLOSSY
hint = "use-hints"
}
}

Each theme of course uses its own
specific controls that you will have to familiarize yourself with. - Jan 26 2011
London Smoke

GTK2 Themes by Padster 95 comments

You have two entries
Regular entry used in toolbar
Spin entry used in combobox.

they are different sizes and you
are probably using the same images for both.

to get similar looks at least for
shadows, I adjust the border numbers. For example,

entry: border= { 1, 3, 3, 2 }
spin entry:border= { 2, 19, 4, 2}

I believe the first two numbers
stretch your image left-right
and third and fourth stretch image
up and down. Do not quote me as I am not sure of this.

And if your using round images
in a square hole no transparency
outside of round image. and background must match background it is located at. ie. toolbars
are seldom the same as bg_color,
though they can be in a simplistic
mono color theme.

Again, hope this helps I have spent more time fixing entries and still have fits with them.

- Jan 26 2011
London Smoke

GTK2 Themes by Padster 95 comments

Yes, then you have transparency problems.

If you are still having issues,
outside of your trough, you must
remove the transparency, on the
outside of your elliptic image and just recolor to your background color.
That's why I suggested the slider
trough I did not see any issues with
it.

Use your gimp selection tool either
ellipse or free select using it
to outline the image that you want to show.

Then, select copy visible
next, undo selection and then
select all.
Grab your eraser make sure the color selector is set to your background color and erase everything.
Finally, just edit, paste into
popping your clipboard image, back
into your art and you should be
good to go.

I hope this helps - Jan 26 2011

GTK2 Themes by Padster 95 comments

Padster,

Since, your slider troughs look great, why not resize them in gimp,
to fit your progressbar
and save as progressbar trough.
I think this would be your easiest
fix. Be sure not to close the
gimp project before you check your
work in the theme, much easier to undo from gimp and try something else, then to start from scratch again. Been there, done that. - Jan 26 2011

Thanks Derick,

That is one of the easier modifications
to make.

We have conversed before and I could answer this in fewer words, however
for others who would like to know
having no prior knowledge, I will
rehash to the basics.

1. It does not matter what desktop enviroment you are running. Please,
always unpack/unzip/untar your themes
and place them yourself in
/home/justus/.themes
of course instead of justus which is my
login name you would use your own login
name.
You will have to create this folder
in your home folder and make sure you
place the dot before themes, .themes
This gives you the rights/permissions
you need to edit/remove/rename/
This folder is automaticly linked to
/usr/share/themes where your distribution themes are located.
Also, the dot before .themes makes
it a hidden folder, so you will have
to select show hidden folders in your file managers view or make a shortcut
to it, like you see in many of my screenshots of thunar, my file manager.
So, If you do not do this step and
let your appearance manager handle installation, it will place all themes
in /usr/share/themes where in order
to make theme adjustments you would
then be required to edit as root or sudo, where a small mistake could cause major complications.

2.You need to open /home/justus/.themes/Xinit/gtk-2.0 remember to use your own login name and not justus.

Everything is controlled with/by
the gtkrc file located in the
gtk-2.0 folder.

So, you would open the gtkrc file
with your text editor.

At the top of the gtkrc file you will see this:
# Xinit
# amended by daman
# free to modify in any... way, shape or form
# when completed,please... share your work

#Remove icon images from menu, buttons, toolbar @ change to 1 to enable
gtk-menu-images = 0
gtk-button-images = 0
gtk-toolbar-style= 0

if you want icons in your menus just
enable or change the 0 to a 1.

Here I have enabled all icon images
the first is for menu, second is for
icons in button images , the third is
for the toolbar.

gtk-menu-images = 1
gtk-button-images = 1
gtk-toolbar-style= 1

3. Finally, after you make changes with
your text editor.
Save your changes.
Go to the menubar,
select File tab, and then select
the Save line. To save the changes
to the file.

Then just restart your theme or log out and now your own your way
to making your own personal theme.

of course Derick you need only enable
the first gtk-menu-images = 1

Since, I have left KDE and its massive
menu, I have not the need of icons
in my menus.
However, sometimes it is handy
and I have been working on updating
my fifyways theme and enabling the
menu icon option with those great looking retro Faenza Icons.
I think it would add to the Steampunk
look.
