I have one desktop set up with a slideshow and the other just a single image. with the plasmoid on the desktop for the slideshow desktop clicking it does nothing.
Look forward to future releases

Here with the Kubuntu Jaunty Jackalope (alpha-1) it seems to work even when wallpaper is in the image mode.

With a dirty trick of some file copying and a fixed name for the wallpaper I am now able to change the wallpaper via a picture's context menu in dolphin (and the picture for the splash and kdm). The new wallpaper just isn't shown until I relogin (or open the wallpaper configuration dialog and confirming it without changing something).
Now after choosing the new wallpaper in dolphin I just need to click on your widget to immediately see the new wallpaper on the desktop without the need to relogin or open the wallpaper configuration dialog.
I don't think it's a solution "for the masses". The servicemenu and a german explanation is here:
