Description:

Black themes mostly based on Dark Cold by Original Seed.
GTK 3.20+
Last changelog:

Ver 2.5 Xfce4.13x 11 months ago

* Reworked PulseAudio panel plug-in for a much more orderly and compliant layout.
* Above panel icon size (along with clipboard and power plug-in icons) slightly reduced (15% less).
* Switch widget reworked to give a less 'bloated' look.
NOTE: PulseAudio plug-in media buttons use the 'panel.png' image not the 'button-normal.png' image.
This is an accepted compromise stemming from parent panel settings. If the normal button images are wanted
then the main Xfce panel button must be changed to 'button-normal.png'. The media buttons can be hidden
for a cleaner more compact look. :)

Is there any chance that we can download the older files? I'm on Xubuntu 16.04 and it's using GTK 3.18. Thanks!

Unfortunately I don't have those files anymore.
GTK 3.2+ is supported from Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty) onwards, so unless you have good reason not to, consider upgrading. :)

I prefer LTS release so I guess I have to wait until 18.04 comes out :). Thank you!

Nice one. :)
Small tip. If you want better panel applet integration with the panel background, open panel preferences --> apperance --> background and select usr-> share-> themes-> Plasma Fire_> gtk-2.0-> Panel-> dark-bottom.png
HEADS-UP: I am starting to consider raising the text brightness a bit higher for backdrop windows so they can be read side by side with a focused window better but still discernible by state. Disabled text will remain as is.
Also, I'm considering having a gentle coloured all edges border around input text entry boxes to stand out better against button widgets.

Addendum to the above: Not all applets are an issue.
System-load-monitor, Free-Space-Checker, Network-Monitor, Disk-Performance-Monitor have better border outline if tip above is used.

Thanks! I'm gonna try that when I'm back at home but it doesn't look bad the way it is.

Looking good!
Except for one 'oddity' which appeared after Gajim upgraded to GTK3:
http://666kb.com/i/dpz0sdfhysix0xq12.jpg (how it looks like)
http://666kb.com/i/dpz0tf7f4md6mefwm.jpg (how it should look like)
Funny thing: Switching back from Adwaita, that huge input box stays small. Closing the window and reopening it brings back a huge input box when using a Plasma theme and a small/correct input box when using Adwaita.

It's not crucial for me but there might be some GTK3 related stuff going wrong. Or maybe it's just Gajim which fools me, who knows ^^

Found the problem. Gajim message entry bar is bizarrely being affected by the vertical scrollbar statement:- (summarised)
scrollbar.vertical slider { min-height: 100px;}
I reproduced this in another theme (Equinox) as well. This doesn't make any sense to happen like this, so I consider this a Gajim bug of some sort. Reducing the 100px to 10px solves the issue but results in tiny scrollbar sliders for everything else, so no fix will be applied.
Thanks for reporting though. :) Strange one indeed.

You're right. Oddly though, if you select a standard theme like Adwaita and then go back to Plasma the problem disappears and entry looks normal size thereafter. I will try to find out...

Info Update: Refactoring of the widget CSS file is ongoing. Code tidy ups, reordering and optimising (I'm still guessing on some bits) to improve notably:
Check and Radio items have been image adjusted for better consistency across all states. Also now work correctly when window is backdropped on desktop.
Notebook tabs have been implemented more correctly for borders and now have a backdrop desaturated active tab indication.
I have increased the backdrop text brightness slightly (as planned above).
Changes are subtle, but were invoked due to strange scrolling issue in Exaile music player (new beta GTK3). Hope to upload soon(ish), dependent on my observations. :)

Thank you for this theme but there are some mistakes if you can fix it like

The browser's blindness is black and misleading is black

Use this add-on to fix the input entry issue:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/text-contrast-for-dark-themes/?src=api

The sidebar works how I would expect it to. Black theme -> black sidebar.
Most of the time I am using css dark override via Stylish plugin anyway so..
Anyway, hope this helps. cheers.

Welcome to the joy of dark themes. It is an eternal struggle. Dark against the light. This is the reality. You will have to delve into the world of CSS user styles to fight your good fight. I cannot help anymore now.
As an aside, your example photo (and URL) will show white text against that black background in those boxes. Just what I'd expect. For more options have a look here:- https://userstyles.org/
Dissect and modify. :)

Ver 2.4 Xfce4.13x optimisations 11 months ago

Panel applets appearance improved and more consistent with overall panel look.
NOTE1: Some panel applets are still GTK2 and some are GTK3. There are inherent colour
rendering differences between them leading to darker or lighter shades.
NOTE2: For best consistency, the theme's 'panel.png' image must still be selected manually via
the panel preferences for the background image.
The info-bar now has a coloured frame when active. Backdrop action button for info-bar now
correctly used (changed from 'button-normal.png').
GTK2 & 3 toolbars given a subtle gradient effect (reaction to Synaptic Package Manager GUI changes).

Ver 2.3b (corrected) 1 year ago

Update Correction 3: Firefox menu background fixed (again) added 'textview' & 'iconview' alongside all other 'views'.

1) Increased text brightness for backdrop state windows, closer to the focused state.<br />
2) Reworked check and radio items for better brightness consistency across states.<br />
3) Realignment of check and radio items across menus to reduce spacing inconsistences.<br />
4) Added extra colour definition for selected text highlighting. <br />
This now uses the main theme colour instead of greyshade.*<br />
5) Themed the gtk on/off switch and also the info-bar to blend better into the theme style.<br />
6) Improved various frames/separators to show panel sections more prominently.<br />
7) Reworked/optimised lightdm greeter theme for tidier parsing. Also increased opacity over-all.<br />
8) Fixed oddities -apparent in gedit- for header/title-bars and popovers. <br />
9) Reworked notebook tabs for better borders drawing.<br />
10) Added new desaturated active button and tab items when in backdrop state.<br />
11) Added some style fixes for firefox, e.g. menu colour and borders.<br />
12) Add colours application for gnome terminal.<br />
13) Added basic entries for gtk3 xfce4 panel.<br />
14) Added progress-bar size fixes for some xfce4 panel applets.<br />
15) Reduced scrollbar lengths to stop stepper button overlaps.<br />
16) Some padding and margin changes e.g. menubar spacing.<br />
<br />
Note: Main CSS file has been stripped down and hacked around a lot. Beware of sink holes!<br />
Improvement attempts for other bits will come when/if ever. ;-)<br />
*Some minor things still broken:<br />
Highlighted text doesn't work as expected in evolution, firefox and libreoffice, e.g. composer, searchbar.<br />
Scrollbar steppers borked in gtk3 libreoffice. Use gtk2 to work around.<br />
certainly other things too. :)

2.2 2 years ago

As of version 3.25.9x, Gnome-Evolution started displaying white borders around the search/toolbars.
Changing the colour definition: 'borders_color' to 'borders' throughout the gtk-contained-dark.css has fixed the issue.

2.1 2 years ago

ENHANCEMENTS: Search/spin button text entry areas restyled to integrate inside GTK3 header/title bars (see image #5) for unbroken visual continuity. This applies to all GTK3 applications proper. If user preferred, the V 2.0 css file is included as gtk-contained-dark-original.
FIXES: Level bar colours working correctly again on each variant (e.g. Baobab disk usage tool) and backdrop progress bar corrected on 'Fire' variant (now monochrome as intended). Returned to squared off (rectangle) style for progress bars due to scaling issues on LibreOffice (possibly others).

Ver 2.0 2 years ago

Discovered that GTK3 notebook tabs (left/right facing) were incorrect. Now fixed (hopefully).
Notebook tabs slightly reworked for better look between active and normal states and GTK2/GTK3.
Backdrop (unfocused) windows slider controls (hover/pre-light) now muted on mouse-over.

Ver 1.9 2 years ago

Reworked/styled spinner buttons/entry (separately for GTK2 & 3). Replaced arrow stepper items for GTK2 & 3 (same style). Added coloured borders to text/search entry (GTK3 only) and spinner items also. Replaced arrows in GTK2 to closely match GTK3. Fixed CSS errors preventing GTK3 backdrop changes from working (not seen with Debian!). Small tweaking of hover/prelight items for scrollbars and sliders. Borders/frames colour reduced (dimmed). Left, right and bottom active tabs now same as top active tab. Other things surely missed...
Note: Issue with widget hover function not working when running Evolution email via alltray utility is unresolved.

Small fix 18a 3 years ago

Fixed typo error at line 1140 in gtk-contained-dark.css
Fixed text brightness in lightdm-gtk-greeter.css
-------------------------------
Note: Still to come, border colour for Xfce4-notification pop up, when it works (GTK3 version) on Debian.
