What are you talking about? tar.gz uses gzip compression, hence the .gz extension.
If you want better compression, use tar.bz2 (bzip)

Gnome does need .wav, not .ogg. I have a sound converter, it's called... SoundConverter and is available in the Ubuntu repos... I don't know what you're using, but it's probably there too.

I've e-mailed you the files, converted. Great theme. I like the startup one best.

Gotta love that open sourse spirit, eh?

Thank you so much for your kind help :D

I will definitely add the .wav files as soon as I'm using a new server.

You're a star!

I love these 'unassuming' sounds :) they have such class. Especially I love the shutdown ones, was torn between 1 and 3, have gone with 3 for now cos i like the bass, you must do more like shutdown 1!

Thank you very much for the advice. It really helps.

I am currently trying to convert the midi files into wavs - having a bit of trouble finding a decent converter. I want everyone to be able to use these!

P.S. I'm a big Final Fantasy fan, so that was my inspiration for the startup melody.

They sound great! The startup sound reminds me of Final Fantasy piano music. Shutdown 2 and 3 are also great. They are all a little to long though in my opinion, except for Shutdown 3.

And maybe you should publish them as .wav files instead of .mid. At least Gnome can't use .mid for system sounds.
