The KMess team announces the availability of a new KMess point release: KMess 2.0.6.1, the newest version of the Live Messenger (MSN) client, powered by the KDE platform. As usual with our 2.0 point releases, it contains a lot of bug fixes, but also general improvements, and even some new features. Here is a quick highlight of the changes in this new version:

Added tabs to the Contact Added User dialog.
Added a fading effect when switching between the initial view and the contact list.
Fixed login issues due to changes in the MSN protocol.
Fixed possible crashes with the Contact Added User dialog.
Fixed retrieval of display pictures from the online MSN storage.
Various other smaller fixes...

Microsoft has changed the protocol and since then I have not been able to connect to KMess

It would be great to have MS Office Communicator support in Kmess. No other KDE IM client provides this yet.

It has been around as part of libpurple library from Pidgin for quite sometime.

Thanks.

kmess is a very promising app.
I am waiting for the day when we can use webcam support.
I hope this day is not very far away...

I am waiting too. I currently have to use aMSN, and not that it's bad, it just doesn't blend into the KDE desktop as nice as Kmess

This is a great MSN messenger for KDE, i only have one complain, can you please add the option to see past conversations inside the chat window, its a very useful feature, and i think is missing from kmess.. aside from that great job!

We've just pushed this change in the KMess git repository, so you can expect this feature to arrive in the next update(s). :-D

And yeah, it's a pretty neat feature to have :D

Is there any chance of getting webcam support in future releases?

Yes, we are working on that. It's in fact our number one priority. However adding webcam is not simple and requires a lot of work. You can expect webcam in KMess 2.1!

When it comes to plain text it all looks the same indeed. (even KWrite and KWord look similar in that sense.. :p).
But if you have more specific needs, you’ll either love KMess and dislike Kopete, or visa vera.

Both applications have a difference audience:
– Kopete is used by people who need to use multiple protocols.
– KMess is used by people who like to have an client optimized for *all* features of *one* protocol.

There are users coming from MS Windows who like to have an MSN client as they’re used to, and preferably better.
This is what KMess offers, and it’s seriously a reason why people switch (or didn’t switch before).

We’re making a MSN Protocol lbrary, which will allow Kopete developers to improve Kopete too if they like to ;)

I had to correct "KACtion" in "KAction" in kmess/chat/chatwindowinterface.cpp (line 148), and add -lssl in kmess/chat/Makefile, in order to compile the program.

Report

What distro are you using? I didn't have to use a -lssl so far.

About the KAction error, this looks a bit silly, doesn't it? :-p If you remove the --enable-phone stuff it compiles (skips that part). The kphone parameter doesn't do anything at the moment.

I use Slacware 10.2.
I did know the problem was kphone, but I didn't know the kphone feature isn't actually implemented!
