Yes, its higher rated even from some kde killer apps !!

I'm really honoured :)

oxy (Dimitris), you are the first man to thank.
If it wasn't for you and your tutorials (and not only) I would never have started this project.

Hi,
I'm not able to install luckyBackup on fedora 10 using the x86_64 rpm.

* yum stops with the following error :

* I also tried to install luckyBackup directly with rpm -i but it failed with :
erreur: Dépendances requises:
rpmlib(PayloadIsLzma) <= 4.4.2-1 est nécessaire pour luckybackup-0.2.1-1.x86_64
rpm-devel is installed on my system, but it seems the fedora version of rpm (based on rpm-4.6.0) doesn't support lzma...

Is it possible to rebuild the rpms with another compression format ?

I built the 64bit rpm package with suse 11 and looks like there is an incompaibility problem with older versions of rpm

Whenever I find some time I will install a 64bit FC10 and build the package there for you(and for anybody else that might experience the same problem).
I won't make any promise that this will happen really soon though :(

I could try to build a rpm for fedora if I got the spec file or a src.rpm.
I tried to extract the spec from the rpm, but I was not able to open it (cpio error).

hi,
another rpm guru (codename "slackware") is already dealing with the "non-compatible rpm" problem in gerneral.

* I really appriciate his overall help *
*** thank you Yiorgos :) ***

If you want to, pm me your email address so that to send you the spec file and source tarball and have a go with the packing.
...or else, just wait for the results that "slackware" will produce
:)

There is also a special package released for Fedora

Thank you very much for your precious help woezonloo. :)

Hi,
on the 6.0.9 slax icon dance but luckybackup doesn't start (no display) even with super user mode (under client account and root account).

For the idea of a catalog of folder (CD/DVD) content, may be this can be used : http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Database/Database-APIs/Katalog-2156.shtml

Bye.

hello again
:-)

could you try and run the app from console and see if there are any error messages ??
just type:
luckybackup

First thought is that the menu links, created by a package, need "kdesu" or "gksu" to execute the app correctly.
If these are not installed, then the app won't appear at all.
If that is the case, you could:
1. Install kdesu (for kde) or gksu (for gnome)
2. Edit the menu link manually and take out the gksu - kdesu part (just leave "/usr/bin/luckybackup")
3. Edit the menu link manualy and replace kdesu-gksu with your distros way of executing an application with root privileges

Again, this is just an assumption.
I'm waiting for the console execution error, if any
:)

Hi Lukas,

1) can you please a little a bit explain what means exactly remote connection ?
Is a remote with ftp available ? Or a shared remote with samba (by example) ?

2) I was always looking for a perfect backup programs and yours seems to be the ONE. But I was also looking for this. Due to the large amount of backuped files it is sometimes difficult to find where is the searched one. It means by saving a file I don't know where it is when I need a restore. For this reason can we hope you realise an inventory entry to help us to find where is a file. By example if I create some disk-X folders that I will burn later. It could be interesting to know on which disk (DVD or CD) I burned the file I am looking to.
I know this is maybe difficult but I presume it can be done.

Thanks for you work and I hope your program will allows this inventory tools (database (like sqlite) with a search engine on filename and/or content).

Hi Miguipda,

1) I suggest you first have a look at the rsync man page. I thing it will help you understand all the principles and ways that it uses for remote connections.
As I already mentioned at my previous post, I think ftp is not supported by rsync.
As for samba, what I have done is mount a directory of a remote machine at my /media/SomeDirectory/ folder using fstab and then declare that (the /media/SomeDirectory/) at the source or destination fields. I do not use the remote groupbox at all and it works flawlessly when I backup the files of a Win-PC within my LAN (it is not mine :-p).

2) That is a very good suggestion (I'm thinking about A LOT OF CODE now, but its worth it).

The plan is to redesign the gui now for the next version and then mess up with the remote capabilities for the next next version.
I am trying to excuse myself for not dealing with that right away :-p
Please bear with me until I do

hi miguipda,

luckybackup uses rsync to make transfers, not ftp.
ftp is a different protocol than the one rsync uses.
So, no you cannot use ftp
(though I'm not completely sure !! see PS).

You might want to consider trying the remote option of luckybackup and see if it is supported by your remote host.
Unfortunately remote connections do not work at the current version (known issue). You'll have to wait for a couple of days until the release of v0.2.1
If you're in a hurry, I could prepare a new version package (with the remote option working) for you (just tell me your architecture and platform eg deb, rpm) and I could mail that.

PS I read at some forum that if you use "ftp.host_name" as a remote module it 's actually gonna work. But I have not tried that...

Hi,

I will wait for the next version.
I use the LZM module package (used with slax have a look to www.slax.org to know how to create modules. Really simple).

Have a nice day and thanks for your work.

I really like the application.
It is fast, and it made my life easier :p

What I think could be improved is the UI.
Right now, to me it looks a bit messed... and why not use the Oxygen icons?

A tip is to take a look at this chapter in the KDE Techbase (even if you don't use all KDE specific widgets it's some nice tutorials for GUI creating):

http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/Usability/HIG

Good luck with the application, I'll be following the development :)

Thank you for your interest and the valuable feedback.
(I keep thanking people for the same reasons. It's not routine. I mean it every time:-)).

What can I say?
Have a look at the to-do list and confirm everything you stated.
The UI is a bit of a mess !!
(I can't believe I'm saying that)

Had a look at the link you provided too. It's gonna prove useful in the future.
But I have more important issues to deal with first and probably it's gonna take some time until the first dramatical UI improvement :-(

As for the icons...
I like the ones I use so much that I tend not to hear other opinions.
...but they are increasing, I have to admit.
...oxygen, does not look that bad after all :-P

Report

I would not say that your UI is "mess".

You just have few dialoges what you do not need. Like when user tries to save profile when there is no actions included, it gives error. Okay, it is good but mayby it could be improved someway not to need user clickin OK?

Your great application just needs polishing... few needed features (later) and reorganising buttons and changing icons, when the application is using more KDE technologies like open/save dialoge. I have never liked the Qt dialoges, reminds too much Windows 9x series, at last not the GNOME ;-)

When Aaron Seigo redesigned the KDE open/save dialoge, there came one good tip for many UI designers, if not already know. User reads the UI from top left and heads to bottom right. (but it is other way around when on arabic countries ;-))

So I would like to try and give you a mockup of your UI... it should not hurt? ;-)

This is just one application what gets used everyday because it is simple enough :-)

thank u (again :-)) for your interest fri.

You are more than welcome to provide your own version of the UI or anything you wish.
You can use my email address for that purpose.
Your help is much appreciated.

I already have an improved UI version (thanks to an email from sombody that arrived a few days ago) but additional work needs to be done in order to implement the changes to the code.
I could also forward that to you if you want me to, so that to avoid producing the same or similar thing twice.

I plan to release another version the next couple (I hope I'll make it !) of days so that to include the fixes of the bugs (known issues) of v0.2.
Very next priority is the UI improvement
