Description:

SMPlayer intends to be a complete front-end for MPlayer, from basic features like playing videos, DVDs, and VCDs to more advanced features like support for MPlayer filters and more.

One of the most interesting features of SMPlayer: it remembers the settings of all files you play. So you start to watch a movie but you have to leave... don't worry, when you open that movie again it will resume at the same point you left it, and with the same settings: audio track, subtitles, volume...

Other additional interesting features:

* Audio track switching. You can choose the audio track you want to listen. Works with avi and mkv. And of course with DVDs.
* Seeking by mouse wheel. You can use your mouse wheel to go forward or backward in the video.
* Video equalizer, allows you to adjust the brightness, contrast, hue, saturation and gamma of the video image.
* Multiple speed playback. You can play at 2X, 4X... and even in slow motion.
* Filters. Several filters are available: deinterlace, postprocessing, denoise... and even a karaoke filter (voice removal).
* Audio and subtitles delay adjustment. Allows you to sync audio and subtitles.
* Advanced options, such as selecting a demuxer or video & audio codecs.
* Playlist. Allows you to enqueue several files to be played one after each other. Autorepeat and shuffle supported too.
* Preferences dialog. You can easily configure every option of SMPlayer by using a nice preferences dialog.
* Translations: currently SMPlayer is translated into more than 20 languages, including Spanish, German, French, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese....

Have you seen "KMPlayer's" playlist? it is integrated into the window which makes it look nice.

smplayer's playlist is a different window (child widget). Which rather looks like gmplayer.

could you please consider making playlist "Part of SMPlayer window" somewhere like KMPlayer?

Anyway it's possible to have the playlist inside the main window.

Edit the config.h and set to 1 the option DOCK_PLAYLIST and recompile.
And tell me what you think.

KMPlayer playlist is good. I compiled with Dock 1 and it's ok but not great.. we need to improve the look and usability of smplayer playlist.

BTW, VCD and DVD tracks are played beautifully, perfectly and correctly :)

Yes, the playlist inside the main window has some problems (specially when resizing).

With Qt 3 is even worse as the scrollbar doesn't show and you can only see a small part of the list.

That's why this option is not activated by default. I'll try to fix these problems but until then I think it's better to have the playlist in a different window.

it is a very good application !!
the idea to remember the subtitles and the time we were before stoping the video is awesome !
I wished that for kaffeine on kde-bugs but nothing for the moment.
fortunately, smplayer is here :)
just one thing, can we have the option to configure shortcut keys for the keyboard ?

Please see the sources of KMPlayer.. KMPlayer can play VCD perfectly. I hope KMPlayer plays Audio-CDs also, but I did not test that feature with it. Playlist is also populated properly.

You ought to see kmplayer sources for the betterment of SMPlayer.. please!

VCD and ACD support will be very easy for u :)

BTW, I've just read the link you put before (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/vcd.html) and according to that, it seems that most vcds really start at title 2.

I'll try to implement support for audio cds soon.

Ah, in the future all titles in dvds, vcds and audio cds will be automatically added to the playlist when the first title starts to play.

VCD support has been implemented in version 0.3.41.

I really need the people to test it, because I'm not sure I've done things right.

it plays vcd://1 (on fails) it plays vcd://2 but after vcd://2 is end-up playing it does not move to vcd://3..

it is okay to let "vcd://1" fail because some vcds has track 1 (i.e., vcd://1 working)

please create a vcd with atleast 5 tracks.. so that you can verify whether smplayer moves to the new track or not..

It wasn't intended to move to the next vcd title.

But now (version 0.3.42) it will, because now the titles (of vcds and dvds) are added to the playlist.

Please add vcd support.. i can play vcd using open->url vcd://1

but i can't use forward,, next buttons to move to vcd://2, vcd://3, vcd://4, vcd://5.

i have to manually use open->url "vcd://5" to play fifth file in the vcd..

i could play 1-10 with this:

"for i in 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10; do mplayer vcd://$i; done"

rvm, SMPlayers quality is increasing whith each release, and though I didn't feel the need for yet another movie-player when it first came out, it now is my second favourite player (out of eleven players on my system...) - it never crashes, starts about as fast as codeine (<1 second) and provides a superb design and usability. Thank you, man!

For me SMPlayer works pretty perfect now, there are only three bugs that do still bug me:

- DVD-Menus are still not handled as first title and in most cases can't be used at all - meanwhile I even tried playing a selfmade DVD (created via ManDVD), and SMPlayer always skips the menu and starts with the main movie / first episode (sometimes with a seemingly random title)

- .txt-subtitles do not work for me

- I can't move subtitles (neither via menu nor shortcuts)

Beside that, SMPlayer keeps amazing me.

Also thanks to linux3114a / Raoul for keeping track of all the new versions and compiling them for SuSE!

DVD menus are not supported yet. mplayer does support it if compiled with dvdnav. But I don't know if it's quite usable yet. I test it recently but it didn't work well for me. But maybe that was because I used and old dvdnav library (I used the one from SuSE 9.2).

Adding support for dvdnav I think it wouldn't be difficult. It would be just to open dvdnav:// and that's all. Title, chapters, audio tracks... everything would then controlled by the dvd menus.

The only problem that I see is how to pass the key and mouse events to mplayer.

*.txt subtitles, I don't have any in that format, so I couldn't test it.

Subtitles can't move if you're using the SSA/ASS library. If this is not your case, then maybe you have an old version of mplayer.

Nope, I am using the last version of MPlayer (1.0rc1) and the SSA/ASS library was off - however, I did find out that when running SSA/ASS it is possible to use plain .txt-files as subtitles in SMPlayer.

Well, then that's a mistery. Moving the subtitles should work with mplayer 1.0rc1.

Although I've seen that idx/sub (and I suppose dvd subtitles) can't be moved.

It would be healthy if smplayer was able to autodetect some libraries such as ASS

in fullscreen mode i clicked right mouse to get context menu than clicked right again and have black rectangle over the picture in place where context menu was opened last time

Does it happens to you always?

When compiled with Qt 4, I've seen sometimes more or less what you explain, the place where the menu was now it's black. But it hasn't happened to me in fullscreen yet but after selecting an option in the menus or just simply browsing on them.

One thing that it really happens to me quite often is that the whole video window gets black after closing the preferences dialog.

Has someone else experienced this problem?

This only happens with Qt 4, with Qt 3 everything is ok. The strange thing is that on Windows (compiled with Qt 4) this problem doesn't happen either.

Stop this dance of numbers... Try to test smplayer a bit more before its release. I love it (I'm currently using it), but two or more new version every day is too much. Why don't you promote your forum participation or svn checkout? I think it will be more "polite".

Hi.

I know that probably the right thing would be to use a svn or similar. But first I have no experience with svn, and second I feel people is reluctant to download versions from svn. For instance, I have never done (with the exception of mplayer, and just because they provide a tar.bz2 ready to compile).

Yes, I could release once a week, I could keep new things and bug fixes in my hard drive for a week, but what for? I prefer to upload it and the people who want can test it. That allows me to catch bugs or problems really soon (like yesterday's Makefile problem).

I'd rather prefer that people use my forum (http://www.phpbbplanet.com/smplayer/viewforum.php?f=1), it's a real forum so it has some advantages: posts can be edited, conversations are easier to follow... but if people prefer to send comments here, what can I do?

I really thank all people their comments and suggestions. Some of the suggestions have been really good, things that I have never thought about. I found all comments that people have sent here very valuable. And I don't want to lose that.

What I can do is to announce new releases here less often, once a week or so. People interested in testing daily packages can check my forum or the download page (http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/linux/download_en.php)
