Description:

SMPlayer intends to be a complete front-end for MPlayer, from basic features like playing videos, DVDs, and VCDs to more advanced features like support for MPlayer filters and more.

One of the most interesting features of SMPlayer: it remembers the settings of all files you play. So you start to watch a movie but you have to leave... don't worry, when you open that movie again it will resume at the same point you left it, and with the same settings: audio track, subtitles, volume...

Other additional interesting features:

* Audio track switching. You can choose the audio track you want to listen. Works with avi and mkv. And of course with DVDs.
* Seeking by mouse wheel. You can use your mouse wheel to go forward or backward in the video.
* Video equalizer, allows you to adjust the brightness, contrast, hue, saturation and gamma of the video image.
* Multiple speed playback. You can play at 2X, 4X... and even in slow motion.
* Filters. Several filters are available: deinterlace, postprocessing, denoise... and even a karaoke filter (voice removal).
* Audio and subtitles delay adjustment. Allows you to sync audio and subtitles.
* Advanced options, such as selecting a demuxer or video & audio codecs.
* Playlist. Allows you to enqueue several files to be played one after each other. Autorepeat and shuffle supported too.
* Preferences dialog. You can easily configure every option of SMPlayer by using a nice preferences dialog.
* Translations: currently SMPlayer is translated into more than 20 languages, including Spanish, German, French, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese....

I recently went through nearly every remotely popular KDE video player out there after having extensive troubles with Kaffeine, and was the most satisfied with this one. Now that the playlist can be embedded into the main window, there's no longer *anything* I miss about Kaffeine. Thanks a lot!!

I've just realized there's a small mistake in the 0.5.41 package.

The compilation will be done in debug mode. That means:

linux) the binary will be much bigger than usual. There could be performance issues as the code might not be optimized.

windows) compilation will fail (unless you have Qt compiled in debug mode)

The fix is easy, edit src/smplayer.pro and replace "debug" with "release" in the 4th line.

Thanks for the info, its only about 10 KB bigger, but if you say it can cause performance loose, that could be annoying :), packs recompiled

anyway, a made an english subpage for Slackware packages of your program, it should be updated with packages rather often

i hope it will be useful

Well, my binary was about 9 MB size with debugging symbols. I guess the Slackware packager removed the symbols, leaving a binary with more or less the same usual size.

I added you link to the smplayer download page :)

BTW, version 0.5.42 is out. It contains a fix for a serious bug: a lot of actions were missing in the action's editor.

yes, you are right, its probably cos my QT4 was compiled with -no-separate-debug-info -stl

new packages are online :)
i will try update them in 1-2 days after every release

thank you for your great program, im using it even under my Windows box too :)

Another comment to say that my first impression was good.

I tryed it, I adopted it.

I especially like the way we can configure how many seconds we move in the stream using the Left and Right keys. In fact the default 10 seconds are very good. It's what I wanted to configure in Kaffeine, but I couldn't.

Well seen.
Good work.

I have an iPod for a few months and it's so amazing it remembers where I was in a movie when I come back later.

This is a single feature, very very small, that makes the difference.

I always wanted it in Kaffeine, or any other player. It should be available in every players.

So I will test this software. It seams as simple as Kaffeine. If it plays videos, and can play subtitles... there is no any more need! But it remembers where I was.

A killer feature that may make me switch.

I completely agree with the reasons that now is the time to start porting to Qt 4.

It would be nice, in order for SMPlayer to show DVD menu, to use the Xine backend only for DVD playing.

Report

+1 !!

Xine is really good, and allowing SMplayer to use both backends would make it the most powerful desktopplayer! ESPACIALLY for DVD Playback!

Hi!
Thank you for this program, it's really usefull, and cool.
But i want to compile it with kde_support , but i can't. I tryed a lot of things, but as i see the main problem is:
playlist.cpp:53:18: error: kurl.h: No such file or directory

And yes, nowehere kurl.h, i think you just forget to copy that, or it's lost somewhere:) I tryed to get that from kde websvn, but i get more errors and fails, and i haven't got enough experience in this, to solve. So i ask you to repair that, please:)

And again, thank you!:)

How about lirc support? SMPlayer do not use DCOP?

I'll try to add support for lirc in the future.

No, it doesn't use DCOP.

But you can send it commands via telnet (telnet localhost 8000).

Kubuntu dapper/feisty - SMplayer can't find themes.

smaplayer themes are in the
/usr/share/smplayer/themes/

but

This is smplayer v. 0.5.14 running on Linux
Qt v. 3.3.7
* application path: '/usr/local/bin'
* data path: '/usr/local/share/smplayer'
* translation path: '/usr/local/share/smplayer/translations'
* doc path: '/usr/local/share/doc/packages/smplayer'
* themes path: '/usr/local/share/smplayer/themes'

Quick fix: sudo ln -s /usr/share/smplayer/themes/ /usr/local/share/smplayer/themes

with checkinstall: correct path -> /usr/local/share/smplayer/themes

From Install.txt:

7) How to make a deb package
----------------------------
First of all be sure you have the package fakeroot installed.
Enter in smplayer-0.5.x. If the directory debian/ doesn't exists, rename
debian-rvm to debian.
Now type "dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot".
The deb package will be created in the parent directory.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The right path for a deb package is /usr/share/smplayer/themes

I just want to thank you so much for this player.
It's easy to use but also highly configurable. I have been looking for this a long time.
Everything works, videos are in sync, subtitles etc. I had lots of problems with xine based players lately and mplayer was always more compatible but lacked nice frontends for KDE.

This is it, thanks again :)
