Description:

This is The Reinhardt Icon Set

- This icon set has been created for use with the Reinhardt Style available from the kde-look site at ( www.kde-look.org ), and is a proposal for the default Slicker icon set.
- This is an SVG icon set. This means that it requires at least KDE 3.2 (if you use anything less, it's really silly of you ;) ). If you want to use the icon set as a PNG set, this is still possible, though it will take you a little while to make it one such. Run the makeiconset.sh script (not the makesvgdistro.sh which is for my personal use mainly) and wait (run it in console to get some verbose output about what it's doing). After this process has completed, swap the two files index.desktop and index.desktop.png around so they are called index.desktop.svg and index.desktop respectively. You should now have a working PNG icon set. Note that this requires Inkscape to be installed as well as ImageMagick.
- If you wish to have the icons a different colour, this is possible by selecting the Icons section of the Control Panel, then selecting Advanced. Here you can set the effect used on all the icons, one of which is Colouration. (thanks to spooq for this tip)
- If you want to use these icons, please give credit where due. They are released under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) (available from www.gnu.org/copyleft ).
- The icon set is based on an original concept by Alexander Smith.

Please note that at least on my machine, the libart included with Konstruct for KDE 3.3.2 destroys the kde icon renderer to the extent that using Reinhardt will crash most applications as well as render most of the icons utterly weirdly.
The way to fix this is to use the makeiconfolder.sh script included with the SVG package to render the SVG files to PNG. Install Sodipodi and run the script from the base of the icon folder (probably ~/.kde/share/icons/reinhardt-0.10/) and wait a while... A rather long while, I'm afraid, it takes a long time to render that many icons.
If you do not have crashy type problems and the icons look fine, there is no need to do this!

Programs used:
Sodipodi ( http://sodipodi.sourceforge.net )
InkScape
ImageMagick ( http://www.imagemagick.org )

Personal Homepage: http://www.leinir.dk/

On the name:
Ad Reinhardt, 1913-1967
Reinhardt was an American minimalist painter, who became known for his extreme style, which also became more and more reductive from the mid 1950s, towards his death in 1967. After 1955 he worked almost exclusively in near-black. This said, there is in fact colour in the paintings, for example his "Abstract Painting no. 5", 1962, which can be found at the Tate Modern ( www.tate.org.uk ), is, though seemingly black-blue, in fact squared with blue and red.

Just wanted to thank you. This icons set is now the only one I have used for a long time.

Same for the Reinhardt style btw. I liked it so much that I spent some time looking at your sources to set the dropshadows to false and modify a couple of things to better ft my tastes :o)

Keep up the good work and have no doubt that people appreciate what you do!

I would, if only the size of the archive wasn't so large ;) Currently, the packaged version of the icon set is just above 11 megs, which is really a tiny bit too much for inclusion... However, when KDE properly supports SVG icons, this is most definitely going in :D Also, I will try for the Reinhardt Style (and KSplash and KDM theme when the specs are drawn up) to be included in 3.3 :)

I loved this theme when I was a KDE user... I've switched to Gnome 2.5 Beta, however. Is there a possibility you may port this to a Gnome icon theme? (I'd certainly do it, but I hate working alone...)

...there is still some icons in my systray that dont get replaced by reinhardt icons (kmix, kgpg, kget). at least for kget im pretty sure there IS an icon in the reinhardt-theme. any ideas why i still get the default icons instead of reinhardts?

I rather suspect the reason is the choice of position for those icons by the program developers... I have the same problem myself with JuK and KGet and a few others, and the problem for those two at least are that the systray icons have been put in %KDEPREFIX%/share/apps/%APPNAME%/pics/ and that I thus cannot change those icons with an icon theme. The only real solution I can come up with is for the developers of those programs to put the icons in a more kde-ish place (i.e. the icon folder) so that they can be themed. I would be very happy for help with this :)

Elegant!!!!

They look ususual compared to most of the other sets out there today, but once you've had them installed for a couple of days, you notice how easy they are to recognize from the corner of your eye. They serve the UI Gods well. There's eyecandy and then there's function. This counts as industrial design.

Timeless and good.

Thanks!

Hello!
Will there be any more updates to this icon-set? I really like it, and all the other icon-sets looks stupid since I started to use this one. I can try to help you, but i'm not particularly good at drawing things...

I'm working on an update as we speak. This update includes a new Get Mail button (long standing hassle for many people), as well as some fixes for the other mail_reply/forward/so on icons, tonnes of app icons, text_ icons and an animation strip (the thing in the top right corner of Konqueror). Also, the Kontrol Center now has a complete set of icons (I strongly suggest the Icon view for this, not the Tree View (standard), due to the extremely detailed icons for most things) :) So yes, there will be an update :) (I'm aiming for sometime this weekend)

Hi, could you post some standards (line thickness, colors) or maybe some sodipodi SVG source files that help others to create icons for this Icon set?

In the Guidelines you mention the Aharoni Font. Is it a free font? Where can I get it?

Thanks for drawing my attention to this... It's actually a font included with Windows 2000 and XP, so I am afraid I will have to find a different one... www.1001freefonts.com here I come! :P Until then, use Helvetica.

Actually, all the sodipodi SVGs are already there :) They are in the ./scalable folder in the tar.bz2, just unpack it and get them from there :) But, that said as soon as I get home I will do up a little text describing exactly the dimensions and colours used in the icons :) (Until then, simply copy/paste them colours (remembering that all enclosed spaces in the icons are not transparent, but a very slight blue)). Oh, and the ends and corners on all items are rounded (the middle button on the stroke style)

Oh, by the way... I hope you don't expect high ratings. I guess there are people that love it and people that hate it with nothing in between.

Please don't stop developing this icon theme.

For an extremely dull icon set (no offense), this has got to be the best I've seen.

I like these icons a lot. In their minimalism, they are usually quite clear about what they represent. I remember the accessibility team was looking after someone to produce a high contrast black and white icon set, once, maybe they are still interested. These should go in kdeartwork, I think. Send more of these icons,
please!
