Last changelog:

Minimum Requirements:
http://code.google.com/p/a-foto/wiki/Requirements
- Python version 2.3.5
- SuperKaramba 0.41 (KDE 3.5.5)

Known Remaining Issues:
http://code.google.com/p/a-foto/wiki/GettingHelp
- Flickr plugin is NOT STABLE. It may delete all your files and burn the computer down. Make sure you have backups before dropping Flickr links onto A-Foto.

Thank you for helping improve a-foto by running afoto in console ('superkaramba afoto-1.6.skz') and sending ALL output to one of the authors.

1.6 (June, 2007)
- Fixed minor issues for users using file-based locking and signalling.
- Gave up trying to make DCOP-based locking and signalling work for everyone. Created LITE version that does checks on simple level, with hope of avoiding "Trying DCOP" hangs. If main package does not work for you, try LITE version.

1.6RC versions (February - April, 2007)
- added status message to startup procedure for easier bug-tracking.
- changed the "status" and "error" images to be more appealing.
- new feature: Edge-guard. Keeps photos from sliding beyond the edges of the screen.
- allow to use fractions of minutes.
- Plug-in support
- Internet (http-based) image and WebCam file plugin.
- Now, no "already running" message under Beryl/Compiz.
- Improved ordering mechanism. No more broken disorder when SK.quit()

1.5 (January 20, 2007)
- Added support for Unicode paths.
- bumped the required SK version to 0.41

1.5.rc (December 17, 2006)
- Starting a second instance of A-foto from SuperKaramba interface no longer breaks afoto. (As an unfortunate side effect, starting additional afoto instances by other means is not safe, hence the warning message inclusion.)
- A-foto settings now try to keep "historical priority." The last afoto closed will the the first opened.
- Introduced optimizations to skip unneeded image rotation / manipulation when not needed.
- Fixed problem with occasional improper EXIF-based orientation.
- Prepared the ground for enabling plug-in support for Flickr, webcam and other photo source variations.

1.5 beta versions (May - Jul 06)
- Enabled EXIF-based auto-rotation
- Added "Pile" frame style
- Enabled Unicode, Gettext-based translations
- Added Spanish and Russian translations.
- "recursive" scanning of dropped folders for images.
- Implemented centering of photos relative to the applet origin.
- This is an extensive rewrite with the goals of: simplification of photo sources management, and removal of visual and procedural imperfections.
- Now, there are 2 viewing modes: single photo (One photo stays forever.) and slide show (Shows photos from the dropped folder.)
- Picture frames now live in ~/.superkaramba/afoto/temas. Put YOUR custom themes there.
- Three new themes by Christian Kreibich

catch me on irc. #superkaramba channel.
ask for suslik, or mention a-foto or afoto. Best times: after 2pm US Pacific Time.

I am responsible for that section of afoto and would like to pick your brain a bit in order to fix this.

I'll try to get by there.

Unfortunately, the problem all of a sudden corrected itself. I've never seen that happen before. I'm thinking maybe previous settings from rc6 may have been preventing a clean startup. Of course, this is all off the top of my head.

It starts and appears on the desktop with a "hammer" and displays "Trying DCOP" but that's as far as I can get and it will not allow me to drop any pictures or change any settings.

I, too experience this problem, but simply restarting superkaramba after boot does not do the trick. What does work is:
1) Restarting superkaramba
2) Adding the themes back to the desktop, making sure that A-Foto is the first to be added. Otherwise, the same error will just appear once more.

My previous message got me to thinking, so I uninstalled all themes except for A-Foto and then reinstalled the other themes so that A-Foto occupied the 'pole position' in my SuperKaramba list.

After restarting the reinstalled themes (in addition to A-Foto), I logged out to test it and...everything started up perfectly at login!

So, this should be an acceptable work-around until we figure out exactly what's going on.

This does not work for me. I still have to restart superkaramba everytime i logged in. This is not so bad for me, because i only log in once at the morning and log of at the evening :)
The other Designes i have installed are Clock Magic 0.1 an Aero All In One 0.9.1.

Please, try to run this in console (as described in changelog section) and send the output to dd AT accentsolution com

If you can, get the 1.6rc6 version out of our google Downloads section. It gives a lot of info to the console.

This is an excellent observation! Finally, there is a hint at what is causing this. Will take a look.

This happens for me as well. I have to restart superkaramba everytime i have boot up my system, but then it works perfect.

I had almost given up trying to make it work (I am new with KDE/Linux, 2 days since I installed it) and found that the problem of the big red cross that I got with this theme has to do with the location of the theme files. I followed the advise of running the theme from the command line and then.. it worked! (I ran it from within the directory where the skz file is located. If I try to install it in SUperKaramba (I use KUBUNTU 7.04v4 and SUperkaramba 0.41). So, now I am trying to figure out where the 'official' directory for karamba is, in order to place all my theme files there, since I also have other RSS reader themes. Hope this helps the developer and other people with the same problem.

This is a very puzzling problem.

Please, please, try to describe in more detail what you did and what you understanding of the problem is.

We will try to fix it for next versions. There were almost 800 downloads of a-foto 1.6rc2, and I am worried you two are not the only ones having the problem.

Update to 1.6rc2 and now it shows only a big red X, no borders and settings menu, what is this error?

Report

suslik

With great help from one of the affected users, the problem was found.

I mistakenly put extra brackets in the code. My python - 2.5 - is very forgiving of that, which is why I missed this issue.

It seems python older than 2.5 complains about it. Will try to fix that (and some other things) and post an rc3 today or tomorrow.

Sincere thx to the user who spent time in helping me track this down.

Our rather standard answer: :)
Try running it in console, like so
"superkaramba afoto-1.6rc2.skz"

And note the errors.
Send the output to the author
info@trebol-a.com and
dd@accentsolution.com

or catch suslik (me) on IRC #superkaramba when it's daytime/evening in California.

Hi Trebol,

I like to use A-foto to display the folder where I keep the wallpapers that I most like. So what you think about include an option in popup menu to set to current photo as wallpaper?

Thanks for this great widget!

I'm using afoto-1.6rc5 and DnD does not work. When I run it from command,it gives alot of response:
Using DCOP to test for presence of other AFoto instances
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/home/henniem/Karamba stuff/afoto-1.6rc5.skz.afoto.py",line 1334, in widgetUpdated KeyError 135831896
Call to widgetUpdated failed

It keeps on pushing out this remark

Afoto - nice idea though*

Report

suslik

It's hard to say what exactly is going on. Sometimes people DnD too fast and Konqueror doesn't actually pass anything. Sometimes A-foto reject the source because it's not supported (smb:// media:// and other virtual urls)

We'll try to put in an indicator into v1.6 to hint that is really going on behind the face.

Again, if you think this IS an afoto problem, catch us at #superkaramba IRC channel and we'll try to figure it out.

How to play photos from 1 to 60?
It could be great to add the function to show multiple directories
