Description:

Before you mod this down, please read.

This is kind of an "pseudoartistic political statement".

A few days ago, some medicore artwork was uploaded to kde-look.org, labeled "new kde mascot", consisting of collages of Konqui, the KDE logo and an female asian fotomodel, who was clothed in some frottee-like bikini (e.g. as in "not nude")

This imagery sparked the complaints of alleged christian folks, who requested that artwork to be removed, and who told that "nude imagery" was offensive to their beliefes.

Remember: Lots of things can be offensive to other systems of belief - "danish carricatures" are only one example that occured not too long ago. Also remember that nude or erotic imagery is as old as mankind.

Ultimately, the "New KDE Mascot" artwork vanished mysteriously from KDE-look.org, without being modded down. This should be an outrage for a community that builds its existance on ideas of freedom and humanism.

This wallpaper should remind us to protect the freedoms we have, against everyone who wants to remove them because of "security concerns", "personal belief" or any other reasons. The burka woman represents what we would get if people with an even less open mind about females in pictures would want and get a removal of works depicting women on kde-look, the rusty gear stands for what would become of KDE-Look, KDE and OSS if basic freedom would be denied on a regular basis.

Freedom starts at home. Freedom starts here.

I don't believe in any religion but I believe that you trample on women's feelings by posting pictures showing women as lust objects for men on kde-look.org. It has nothing to do with nudity or burka women or freedom, it is a matter of fairness and respect.

Wow...

If you don't like something do go there. This goes back to the 10 commandments as well which boils down
to do 'Don't harm anyone else unless they are threatning your life', which includes not killing them. Known which
commandment you would break if you did?

Women has posed for pictures of them selves for the same reason men want to look at them. If you tell a woman she
looks like hell she'll be offended. Why? Because attractive people are percieved as better partners hence a
women do want to show off to attract partners. Simple and also shows why women has a whole lot of power. And why
men want to cover them up... Why feminist goes to this trouble as well is a weird biological quirk... remove competition?

If the woman in the first artwork wanted to be photographed she surely didn't intend it to be eyes only, it'd
go against her biological need of attracting attractive partners for her self.

And using religion is the oldest way of controlling a group of people, shouldn't we have moved beyond those
old ways soon. Are we still a bunch of uneducated cavepeople? Pathetic...

At any rate, Linux is about choice as long as you don't break the law. Very good rule of common sense I say and why
not let that rule here as well? As long as noone breaks the commonly agreed law of where they live and the servers
reside it should be allowed.
And no religious mumbo jumbo, has to be an approved law of the country you actually live in.

I seriously don't see how I could trample on the feeling of a woman who willingly has accepted on posing for a photo.

The only woman shown as a 'lust object' is the posted one. This has nothing to do with womankind in general.

The difference between one tribe and another: one tribe will complain about seeing female nudity, but the other will kill you for it. I greatly prefer the world of the former, where people have the freedom to express their opinions.

The tribes in Western Civilization have learned to live together despite our disagreements. The burka does not come from this culture.

Are you stating anyone can upload whatever he deserves to kde-look?

No - There should be boundaries, defined by the law governing the area the site owner operates from. This law usually has reasons for denying particular imagery (sodonomy, kiddie porn, etc...). I'd also believe that KDE-Look should not alow hard porn (eg. closeup of genitals doing what genitals usually do).

Besides of that, I believe there should be either a strict guideline what to remove (e.g. depiction of women in suggestive poses, as there are literaly hundreds on KDE-Look), or no restrictions at all.

KDE-Look surely has greater problems than appeasing religious nutheads. Just think of all the work based on propritary photos that is released under the GPL :|

I feel very sorry, exactly between sorry and astonished. Sorry because this talk has place in kde-look and ahtonished because people do not see this is not the place for this. I am not a founder of kde-look, nor I've been here from the begining. Just I've been visiting this site 2 years and I've contributed a little bit. But I believe (read: believe) this is just a kde/linux artwork site.

I do not want this wonderfuul place of share made another photo-upload place, or political battle forum. You talk about "appeasing religious nutheads"... WTF? I am openly atheist and I see this off-topic.

And please, other errors are not excuse. A OT content do not make the next OT good. Nature, landscape have a very little, little excuse: Thay can be included in a linux distribution. The artistic nude stuff (who said porn is plain stupid)... again, WTF?

I do not see bad a splash with a male background: OK (see thorsel). Nothing bad with anime/hentai chicks (see blacktiger), or a tit, or an ass. But things are getting crazy (no names here, we all know)

So pictures "suitable" for inclusion in distributions are ok? Don't you think this is in a way hypocrisy? Hypothetically, would you be ok with those pictures if someone made a distro called "Chicknux", based on the Linux kernel, KDE and lots of erotic/nude imagery? The kind of pictures you and some other folks detest would be perfectly suitable for "Chicknux", don't you think? Would it *then* be ok to post them here?

I'd bet even then you and others would rage a war on artistic photography.

I am sorry I offended your belief system by falsely putting you in the christian corner. It's kind of a generalization: Most people standing up on such content prominently have flown the banners of their cults, and all to often those were the banners of fundamental christianity.

Let democratic principles decide: Use the moderation system for sorting out inappropriate non-criminal imagery. Anything other is bigotry.

If that chicknux exists and the content is related to it I'll have to shut up mi mouth. But there is not that distro so...

You may lost that bet. I like nudity, I own and see porn, I have nothing again it. So dificult is to understand I am talking about off-topic content?

If someone says stupid things based on religion, you should ignore them, and not to lose the point here: again off-topic.

I got your las point, you are right. The community moderation is the way to get content in and out. I just want to remember what this place is for.

How can you say Chicknux doesn't exist? Basically, now it does. Stay tuned for an official announcement :)

I really wished you were right and my initial post were off-topic. I'd be glad I could ignore religious fanatics. Unfortunaley, these fanatics seem to have a voice loud enough to get this sites administrator to remove artwork if they feel "offended". And then, I refuse to ignore this. Beware of the beginnings, who knows what will be "offensive" tomorrow. Not that off-topic, ain't I?

BTW.: I think that "new kde mascot" artwork actually had a relation to KDE, as it featured the current mascot.

My English has seen better days... In Germany, "Sodomie" means zoophilia, and has nothing to do with homosexual content. I didn't mean to offend gay people.

According to this: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=sodomy sodomy may mean:

Anal sex
Non-vaginal male-female or male-male intercourse of any type
Any act of 'abnormal' or 'unnatural' intercourse, especially anal intercourse or bestiality.

AFAIK, by biblical canons, any sex position, except missionary, is considered sodomy. So, if you have ever tried "doggystyle", "cowgirl", "69" or any other position, you're a sodomist to the true christians...

Voted up. Couldn't agree more. :)

If something offends you, it's as simple as ignoring/avoiding it. Besides, I don't see any Christian groups getting pornographic websites shut down, so why take down a simple image?

I'm not anti-religious or anything, but if you ask me, the moment your religion starts getting in the way of my rights is the moment that I stop caring about anything you believe in.

Report

I would sign that and add: The moment religion hinders giving people as much freedom as possible without obstructing others freedom is the moment I stop caring in your beliefs.

Most of our rights and restrictions were created by religious people, so there are still many leftover rights which restrict personal freedom on the base of religious morale.

i voted up because i probably couldn't agree more with you. the so-called western world is unbelievably egocentric and closed despite all the slogans it keeps repeating without at all seeing that they're the first not to follow them.
although, i'm afraid most people will just pass by this mascot and think you're a muslim terrorist trying to undermine their sacred freedom.
btw. i hate it when people say "muslim terrorists" - it's just raising aggression against a religion none the less peaceful than buddhism or christianity. a tremendous ignorance.
my post's prolly too long to be read, too :/
