What is it?
Colibri provides an alternative to KDE4 Plasma notifications.

Colibri notifications look lighter and are completely passive: they do not provide any buttons. You may or may not like this.

Since they are completely passive, they smoothly fade away when you mouse over them, allowing you to interact with any window behind them.

They also do not stack each others: if multiple notifications happen, they will be shown one at a time.

Dependencies

You need kdelibs >= 4.4.

Setup
Colibri can be configured from its System Settings module.

A bit of history

Passive notifications for Plasma first appeared as "Ayatana notifications", an alternative notification system I implemented in Kubuntu Karmic as part of my work for Canonical.

Ayatana notifications were implemented as a patch against the systemtray applet. Colibri is based on this work, but does not require patching any applet.

Colibri contains code I wrote for Canonical, but it is not a Canonical product.

Yes, it works. You have to go into System Notifications and disable application notifications. Then enter 'notify-send Hello' in a terminal to test that it works.

Unfortunately, the one thing I find myself needing to do is type that command every time I start my computer :-/ Anyone know how to fix that issue?

Hm. It may be that I'm blind, but I can't find the entry "application notifications" in system settings -> notifications. I use kubuntu - kde 4.4.3. Any ideas where I could find it?

Right click the system tray, System Tray Settings>Application Notifications ;-)

You just put /usr/bin/colibri into the autostart.

Hi! I'd like to try out Colibri and I did a Gentoo package for it. But unfortunately, it tries to override /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Notifications.service which belongs to x11-misc/notification-daemon package.

Is there a way to avoid this file collision? I mean, if one wants to remove Colibri, he will have to reinstall notification-daemon after... Thanks!

This is a good work, but can you add the transfert notifications, i.e. when you copy a file? :)

Unfortunately this is not possible: file transfers are handled in a totally different way than notifications, they just *look* similar when rendered by Plasma.

hi.. first of all i want to thank you for providing alternative to existing notifications system ;) i don't know if this is final state of your work but from my point of view there are still some things that i'd like to change

imo notifications/job transfers shouldn't interfere with your work.. so in my case i really don't want to see them when i'm working with other application (especially the fullscreen one). i'd prefer to see only notifications/job transfers for application that i'm currently using and others (background ones) should be marked as unread and moved directly to some kind of history stack (job transfers could/should be revived when application comes to foreground). i think this would require some kind of possibility to browse history stack and seeing number of unread notifications in system tray

anyway i hope you find some of my ideas interesting and maybe you'll implement them in your notifications system ;) cheers

Colibri is working great with "Plasma Notify" extension!

As far as I know, this is the only extension that works with Colibri.

Hi, I'm using Kubuntu 9.10 with KDE 4.4 and I'm trying to get the Ayatana/Colibri notifications back. I installed the .deb package provided here but it still doesn't work for me. What else do I need to do?

But why no actions? Canonical is promoting something, what's completely senseless for me: notifications which I can't do anything with: not clickable, with no way to response them...

Reasons for not using actions on notifications are:
- it avoids the "urge to respond": you are not stressed by having to click on a button before it goes away because there is no button
- it allows for click-through

As I said, you may or may not like this. If you don't it's totally fine, just use the default Plasma notifications.

Colibri doesn't fit with kde 4.4 desktop.

In kde 4.4, plasma popup have a small white shadow overs black fonts to make it readable with transparancy...

This feature is missing in colibri.

I upgraded KDE in Kubuntu Karmic and Ayatana stopped working.

So I compiled Colibri and I can see the position settings in SystemSettings, but I don't see any notification, just the classic KDE ones.

Have I to "disable" something or what?
