Description:

What is it?
Colibri provides an alternative to KDE4 Plasma notifications.

Colibri notifications look lighter and are completely passive: they do not provide any buttons. You may or may not like this.

Since they are completely passive, they smoothly fade away when you mouse over them, allowing you to interact with any window behind them.

They also do not stack each others: if multiple notifications happen, they will be shown one at a time.

Dependencies

You need kdelibs >= 4.4.

Setup
Colibri can be configured from its System Settings module.
If you need help follow the setup howto at http://gitorious.org/colibri/pages/SetupHowto.

A bit of history

Passive notifications for Plasma first appeared as "Ayatana notifications", an alternative notification system I implemented in Kubuntu Karmic as part of my work for Canonical.

Ayatana notifications were implemented as a patch against the systemtray applet. Colibri is based on this work, but does not require patching any applet.

Colibri contains code I wrote for Canonical, but it is not a Canonical product.

2010.08.05 - 0.2.0
New features
- When a second notification arrives from the same application, using the same title, append it to the existing notification.
- Notifications use blurred background on KDE 4.5.
- Notifications use a background halo behind text, similar to what Plasma tooltips do since KDE 4.4, as well as the Plasma theme foreground color.
- Implemented support for the replacesId parameter.
- It is now possible to specify the screen where the notifications will appear.
- A "Preview" button has been added to the KCM.

I don't understand - what is ugly about that? IMHO it really looks fine...

ok, now i can compile it. had a wrong version of attica installed.

i have the same problem here. no shadows around air popups with 0.2.1. same problem with version 0.2.0. looks exactly like on the screenshot of gomezhyuuga1.

i'm using nvidia driver. there is also no blur effect (no shadows also with blur disabled).

I use the package from AUR and it works great for me. Do you tried it?

That's weird, Colibri does not directly use these libraries. I am afraid something is wrong with your system.

Thank you very much! It works like a charme!

Hi, thanks for your work on Colibri, it is really appreciated! Is the download provided here the only way to install it, or is there any chance to use a PPA to keep it always up-to-date? Many thanks!

I may set up a PPA for it later, but don't hold your breath on it :)

I Love colibri notification!
It's very similar to notofiy-osd but more beatiful thanks to a lot of plasma themes ;)

Here's a small suggestion to fix the "thick" shadows when using the blur effect in KDE 4.5. I had the same problem with the Smooth Tasks applet when I wrote a patch for it to support the blur effect. For the NotificationWidget class, override QWidget's default showEvent(), and in the function of course call QWidget::showEvent(), and then call Plasma::WindowEffects::overrideShadow(winId(), true);
It kills the KWin's shadows and uses only the shadows provided by the plasma theme.

@sakirst
Could you share your modification for smooth-tasks (blur support) or is it already available somewhere?

Report

sakirst

I have not supplied a proper patch to the author of smooth-tasks yet, I have been really busy. I will try to get it to him as soon as possible.

Report

Perhaps you could share this patch in comments for smooth-tasks also, so that everyone (including myself) could apply this patch manually before it gets added by author ?:) I would really like to have fully functioning smooth-tasks tooltip in KDE 4.5 :P

Thanks for this suggestion. I just applied it and will probably release 0.2.1 shortly to include this fix.

No problem! I really like this style of notifications, and this was the only flaw I saw so far. Glad I could help. Thank you for your work!

Anyone know how to get it working in KDE 4.5?

(I need to disable the default KDE notification part, but I can't figure out how)

Found it.
Right click on the "i" in the circle. Notification Settings
Uncheck Application notifications

This notification system is pretty nice, but I would really like the ability to modify the width of the notifications. On my system, I have the notifications set to appear centered on the top section of my screen. There's plenty of horizontal space available, but for longer notifications, the text wraps down in lines in a way that I find frustrating.

I installed colibri on my Kubuntu LL from repositories; it works but that's what i get

http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/831/cornerscreen.png

Why is it so yellow???? And... it's not passive: i can close it (that's good for me, but it's strange for colibri)...

I used to use it on KK and it worked very well...

What you are seeing is not Colibri: it is Notification-daemon, the default GNOME notification display. You should be able to fix this by uninstalling notification-daemon.

Unfortunately there is no way right now for a DBus service like Colibri or Notification-daemon to specify it should only run on KDE or GNOME.

I disinstalled notification-daemon, now it works very well, tnx
