IDEA: desktop areas
Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements
Source (link to git-repo or to original if based on someone elses unmodified work): Add the source-code for this project on opencode.net
This is an idea to asign icon areas to the desktop. This will let us create:
- new icons areas: areas where new icons appear, so that they don not mix with our permanent icons and it is easy to find them.
- no icon areas: areas where icons cannot stay. This areas would be really helpful for superkaramba, since if it creates one of this areas where every theme is, you will know for sure that there are no icons behind them.
This could also be integrated with SVG backgrounds, so, when u create the background you create shapes for this areas and you know that the icons will be nicely distributed in your background.

First a "device" area there CDs, usb-key and other storage devices are shown. A dynamic area.
Second permanemt icons, like trash, home and "my documents".
Third could be application-links, for quick access. Optional of cause. This is for the users who use shortcuts on the desktop for "quick launch".
Fourth normal files and folders stored on the desktop.
There would still be room for your suggestions.

thats a very nice idea.
I think it would be also good, if it would be possible to get e.g. an area at the right side where no window could go (2) and a area where my normal programms can go (1). So that I can have on the right side my karamba widgets and my TV window (2).

What has to be thought is a way to make it easy to manage by users. The ways i can imagine now, from worst to best are:
- give a list of templates to choose and an import function that imports SVG files with the areas defined
- give the user a tool to set the areas in a representation of the desktop.
- create the areas directly on the desktop, so that you can align the areas with the windows and the icons you are viewing.
What has to be done:
find a developer!
or
ask the kde people to develop it, but this will go to the end of the queue of feature request.

On Kubuntu, even the trash is in kicker, so the desktop is empty by default. That's another way of having a clean desktop...

i have 30 icons on my desktops
how do i do that with kicker? kubuntu the only thing that does is to put the trash in the kicker and remove the other icons.
of course, the idea is useless for u, but thank u anyway for the opinion :)
