Description:

* Slicker, an alternative to the KDE kicker!
See http://slicker.sourceforge.net for details.

Refer to http://slicker.sourceforge.net/install.txt
if you would like to install Slicker from sources.

--
* I've made rpm packages for RedHat9/Mandrake9.1.

Download Slicker RPM/SRPM at
http://dor22288.kaist.ac.kr/Slicker/

(WARNING: Slicker is in pre-alpha status.
So, use it only for the testing purpose.)

Run 'Slicker' at the Kcontrol LookNFeel.
(or type 'slicker&' at a command prompt.)

--
* If you are daring enough, you can also have Slicker start at Bootup/Login instead of Kicker. Do:
$] cp -rf /usr/share/autostart $HOME/.kde/share/
and change "Exec=kicker" to "Exec=slicker"
in $HOME/.kde/share/autostart/panel.desktop with your favorite text editor.

Restart X server and have fun. :)

This looks very nice, I think i like the normal kicker just as much though. There is no real advantage of using this over the normal kicker, it's just eye candy in my opinion.

Hi there,

Installed slicker in my Mandrake 9.1 system, and all went smooth. The only thing that doesn't work (which worked well with an earlier release of slicker) is the 'XEmbedCardApplet', which is one of the most interesting Cardapplets in Slicker... Any hints/tips on how to get it working ? When i select to add an XembedCardApplet, nothing happens, no card is being added onto the desktop... Please help ?

ps. Keep up the work !!! Slicker RULEZZZZ !!!!! :-)

I really like this alt to kicker. I have gotten everything to work ok except the systray card. No matter what I do, if I add the systray card, the next time I log in, it crashes with signal 11 as slicker tries to load. I have this happen on two different machines. Can the native systray still be starting even though kicker is not?

Thanks and keep up the good work!!

So I install Slicker, works fine. I shut down my computer, boot it back up again, log into KDE, and Slicker's gone!
I go into my terminal and type 'slicker' and it tells me: "slicker is already running!"
What do I do to either a) close Slicker or b) make it show up again?
I'm ticked off I don't have my Slicker :)

Edit your ~/.kde/share/config/slickerrc and change enableTestGui=true. Then restart slicker, or KDE or logout/login.

Slicker installed with no problem. But it won't run. Every time I get this error:

slicker: error while loading shared libraries: kicker.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

This is completely wrong. The file is in /usr/local/kde/lib and that is in ld.so.conf. I reran ldconfig just for good measure, but it didn't help. I also tried adding a sym link in /usr/local/lib. Same result. So, why can't it find a library that exists and is in the path?

I think you are not using RedHat9/ Mandrake9.1.
Or, your KDE is not in the standard directory, e.g /usr.
These RPMs were compiled with the option, --prefix=/usr.
So, if your KDE directory is not /usr, my slicker RPM doesn't work.

In this case, get SRPM (.src.rpm) and rebuild it with --prefix=your_kde_dir.
-- HOW-TO --
1. get SRPM according to your distro.
2. Unpack SRPM
( # rpm -ivh slicker-*.src.rpm )
3. Modify the slicker.spec file.
( # cd /usr/src/RPM_or_redhat/SPECS/
and change "./configure --prefix=%{kdedir}"
to "./configure --prefix=/usr/local/kde" in slicer.spec.
* I guessed your KDE directory.
To find out what is your KDE directory,
just type "kde-config --prefix" at a command prompt. :)
4. Rebuild the Slicker.
( # rpmbuld -ba slicker.spec
It will take some time to rebuild the Slicker.)
5. Install the Slicker.
(The result of the step 4 is binary rpm
which can be found at /usr/src/RPM_or_redhat/RPMS/ix86/ .
Go to this directory, and install the Slicker.
# rpm -Uvh slicker-*.ix86.rpm )
-------------------------------
Good luck!

I got it to work by adding a sym link to kicker.so in /usr/lib. I have never before encountered a Linux application that could only access a library if it was found in a specific directory. If a library is in any directory found in ld.so.conf then the application ought to be able to access it.

Also, the location of this library may be "non-standard" for Redhat. But RedHat's whole setup for KDE is non-standard. That's why I compile KDE from source.

But thanks for offering the RPM.I just wish it functioned in a UNIX kind of way.

SlicKer deserves nothing less than a high 90's. This is about the most origional "taskbar alternative" I've seen. It's ton's more "eye appealing" than the standard Kicker. And when it's combined with the power of Karamba... LOOK OUT!

I can't wait until this thing is complete and fully functional like the mockups at it's homesite http://slicker.sourceforge.net/screen-mockups.php

Althought the function is limited for now, I will be using it!

MUSH!! MUSH!! On with it!

Actually, Slicker is still in pre-alpha (meaning not even the core is complete in any sense of the word), and what we have here isn't actually an official release... We're obviously veeery happy that people like what we're trying to do here, but on the first meeting helt by the Slicker development team on #slicker on irc.freenode.net (which anyone is welcome to join by the way), it was decided that no releases should be made, source or otherwise, outside of CVS before we are at beta stage. By then, obviously, we will be most happy to see these things, but so far I'm afraid it will 'do more harm than good' (quote from the discussion in the meeting). However, everybody are very invited to have a look at the Slicker homepage at http://slicker.sourceforge.net :)

There are instructions on the Slicker homepage on how to get the CVS version and compile+install on most distributions, in case you wish to try it :)

This really rocks...it should become a standard in KDE 3.2, so we can avoid called "rippers from other OSes". Guys, congratulations.. There is only small things that disturb me: Why are the cards always on top?
And where is the "logout" and the other buttons on the bottoms of the KDE-Menü gone? And you should add a Digital Clock.. I think these are only small flaws that can be "fixed" easily...

You can make card go to the left, right, bottom or top in the testgui app.
Just click a card and right bollow its position..
