Description:

I've found a way to do what I designed with my poor gimp skills, there is a way to modify the virtual_folders in the sidebar and to hide the tab bar (thanks to Joseph G. O. Wenninger) I've made that, by now other improvements requires to modify the devices:/ ioslave code (for implementing audiocd:/ when an audio cd is inserted, instead of having another slave in the sidebar and for the eject button) is also needed a way to configure the sidebar behaviour now that the configure button is disappeared (maybe you want to use some more tabs, for embedding something)
By now the lan browser and the preferences entries won't show anything into the sidebar tree if someone is able to get it work, please let me know

updated, now there is something to try :-D

I just installed it, and I like the idea of having everything in one view. But actually, I want my tabs back and don't want the LAN-Browser and the preferences.
How can I modify this theme? And does it override old files or do I have my old settings back when I remove them?

I think, you should supply a README next time where you answer just to these questions.

Hey Ra1n,

this is just what i miss in KDE 3.2's Konqueror. earlier in kde 2.2, sidebar was something like this. I strongly support this to be the default Konqueror's Tree view.

This is especially useful for low resolution, which are lesser than 1024x768.

My good wishes...

Thanks, but you must also say thank you to the original developer of the sidebar that made it very customizable(hint: but could be better :-D) by now the great problems are smb:/ and setting:/ io slaves that won't work correctly with tree view, in fact the error in smb:/ (but also, even worse, in settings:/) is caused by an incorrect tree view representation....by now the servers are not children of the workgroup :-O so it's impossible to display a correct tree of a network, I'm looking at the kioslave code but without success :-( I've seen that this thing is still listed as an unconfirmed bug on bugs.kde.org

Sorry for adding to the flame war......

I know this has nothing to do with the project, but what shits me so much is when people constantly criticise the work and effort people put into development on Linux. Give the developers a fair go. A lot of effort has gone into making even the smallest thing work, and even if you do not like it, doesnt mean it should be so poorly criticised. How about offering some encouragement and some suggestions so together we can improve things? Grow up for gods sake.

I can picture it now, he will remove features until he decides to use his skills to remove X ... then go backwards in time till we have DOS.

Many people says that linux says that Linux is about choice, so if u don't like it or just don't need it, don't use it. Some people may find it useful, that's not my case, but however this project may be useful to Linux community and so it deserve respect. That's my point. Keep up the good work ra1n.

Working under WinXP has become awful as many features are hidden or not accesible. But I think your proposal is a good one the cleans up konqueror from a usability perspective.

If I had skills I had removed people like you long time ago :-P
Damn what is the problem? you don't want to use my layout? don't use it. I made this because it's difficult to work with the standard sidebar. I need to copy something into another pc...Oh! in the sidebar there is lisa that won't work! I need to open another knqueror windows, I want ot copy something directly into my home oh I have to change tab in the sidebar!
I like to have all things in one place, and that is what I've done, by now other tabs are useless for me so the tabs bar occupies screen space.
When I'll be in need of other things I'll add them to the sidebar (which I didn't modify) tabs are still there (and they will never go away, people must choose) there is only an option to hide them turned on

Right bloody on ya! If people could simply get past their "Hey this is teh sux0rz" and look at what's in front of them with an open mind, we'd quick get a good discussion going, in stead of random flaming.

Now to my suggestions: I like the idea you have to have the settings button in the top right corner. This way it's not in your face, but still visible enough to not be obscurely hidden. In the menu that comes up when the settings button is clicked, a simple checkable menu item saying something similar to "Show sidebar tabs" alongside the existing options already in the menu we already have should be visible, and this view simply another tab there, if that is not already the case (I have to admit I've not tested it out yet ;) ).

I would love for this to be implemented completely, it is a great addition to Konqueror's sometimes ever so slightly lacking usability.

Thanks
A better way could be having the tabs bar appear if there are more that 1 tab like mozilla and konqueror do with tabs.
I'm busy now so I haven't got the time to look at the code (of sidebar and ioslaves) to (try to) implement missing features.
By now It's possible to the services tab by adding/removing .desktop files in konqsidebartng (and sidebar-kicker if you want to hack the universal sidebar)
In my idea the services tab should be the main sidebar, so menus for customizing it are needed, let's see what is possible to do :-D
bye

I like the idea for re-organization of taht sidebar, but not for removing the tabs alltogether.

I think its an ugle rip-off that is less functional than what currently exists.

The usefull feature to add would be to read the CD info. Then it could be displayed like:

- /mnt/cdrom (My stuff)

or
- CD-ROM (My stuff) [/mnt/cdrom]

or
- CD-ROM (My stuff) [hdc]

What do you think?

Report

well it could simply print the content instead of the CD-ROM name.

something like:

+(icon) My Stuff [/mnt/cdrom]

ps

an interesting thing could be creating a dynamic mountpoint named like the cd volume label instead of the standard cdrom, but it requires more work underneath the system

yes, as you can see I've updated this thing and started to show somthing, by now the last features needed(your idea for example) needs to modify the devices:/ ioslave

Since when do we have any qualms about copying other tried-and-true designs? The highest rated KDE Style on KDE-look is a blatant rip-off of OSX's Aqua. If it's good and functional, who cares if Windows also uses it?

.. but it is actually hard to tell if it is good or bad from only a picture. Could you make a patch to konqueror to see how it works for real ?

Thanks in advance

actually this is only a mockup, I know little about qt coding, maybe I could try, if there is any developer out there able to do this please let me know.

The open button for cdroms is good, and disk partitions are usefull for beginers.

But why printer and please don't add useless crap like printers. If it's a must to be in konqueror, then make only one icon for all settings. I think in general, settings should be in kcontrol center and not in a file manager.

However he's right, it's no good to copy.

actually printing system is already on the services tab, I agree that probably it's of little use, but this could be solved adding the possibility to add/remove links from the sidebar.
About copying, this is not copying, I've simple moved things that kde sidebar already own into a single space, the only addition is the eject button

KDe is no WinXP or Mac OS X rip-off, it's a genuine operating systems with its own ideas. This adds only bad usability.

get sunzi, "art of war" (translated into german as well)
and try to figure out about the importance of knowing, lerning from and stealing from your enemies

(if you're brave, get clausewitz as well (but he has his very own style of expressing himself...))
