Finally, i'm glad to present the first stable release of this pack. A lot of job were done since the first release and I hope that you people have been enjoying this theme :)

This is a project that provides an automatic configuration of your GNOME desktop just in one click, with the backup and restoring support.
The main goal of this projects is to create the most complete dark theme for the GNOME desktop with easy installation experience.

You must have this stuff installed on your system before you'll start:
Murrine GTK engine 0.98.0 or higher
Droid Sans Font
Nautilus Elementary (optional)

The pack contains the following stuff :
GUI utility to configure your desktop
Icon theme: Elegant-AwOken based on the AwOken icon set by alecive
GTK+ theme: Elegant GTK theme v 4.0
Cursor Theme: Neutral++ by ducakar
Wallpaper: gDIGE by *Muscarr
Keyboard layout indicator flags
Firefox theme
Google Chrome theme by Jorge Carrillo
Google Chrome scrollbar extension
Google Chrome selection extension
Smplayer theme
Pidgin buddy list theme by Szabo Istvan

Ubuntu Lucid/Maverick and Linux Mint 9/10 installation instructions:
1. Install Elegant GNOME:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:elegant-gnome/ppa
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
a)sudo apt-get install elegant-gnome
or
b)sudo apt-get install elegant-gnome-mint
2. Go to "Applications -> Accessories -> Elegant GNOME"
1. Install Nautilus Elementary: (optional)
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:am-monkeyd/nautilus-elementary-ppa
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
2. Run Elegant GNOME app
3. Choose Configure Nautilus -> Nautilus Elementary

To install the pack from sources:
1. Download the archive and extract it
2. Open the terminal and cd to the extracted directory.
3. Run the command "make "(e.g. "make ubuntu").
run "make help" to see the available variants.
4. Run the command "sudo make install".
5. Go to "Applications -> Accessories -> Elegant GNOME".
6. Optional step. If you use the Nautilus Elementary:
a) Go to Applications -> Accessories -> Elegant GNOME
b) Choose "Configure Nautilus"
c) Select "Nautilus Elementary"

To remove the pack:(installed from sources)
1. Open the terminal and cd to the extracted directory.
2. Run the command "sudo make uninstall"

To install the Google Chrome theme:
1. Download and extract the "Google Chrome" archive
2. Drag and drop the *.crx files into the Google Chrome window.

This theme is absolutely gorgeous the only slight problem i have is.
The gdm install doesn't work on archlinux without a few tricks. But even then it doesnt change the screen after you locked your machine and have to enter your password.

Last time i was testing the pack on Archlinux last time, everything worked as it should. Actually there was a problem with the archlinux's new gksu package(you can find information about this on archlinux's forum), so you've just downgraded it.

I hope this doesn't seem too dumb a question. First I think this is the best pre-packaged theme I've run into. But I do like to try other themes on occasion. My question is, do I need to unload all of Elegant Gnome before I try a different theme? Or, once it's installed, can I just try others by switching themes in the appearance panel?

Of course, you can. But it's better if you run Elegant GNOME app and choose the "Restore the previous settings" menu before applying the new themes, becouse during the installation, Elegant GNOME app installs some specific fixes (like the fix for the Firefox), that may cause the problems with the other themes. And if you decide to go back to Elegant Gnome, you'll just choose the "Install the pack" menu entry again.

My friend,
I'm on linux from a couple of ... centuries (LOL) and please believe me if I tell you that this is the best theme ever!
"elegant" is the right word, nothing else to tell :D
Thank you very much, I found my theme after 20 years, it is the first one I didn't changed after one week, it's still on my gnome from a month now and I'm installing on all my friend's laptops :D

I originally had this theme with a lighter coloring, but with the dark toolbar. How do I get this back? I recently wiped my hard drive and reinstalled/upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10

By reinstalling elementary nautilus and then purging the source list again I was now able to restore the default version.

Now I can go and enjoy this theme! :)

That's what I thought.

Before installing this theme, -all- traces of elementary where gone.
Now I installed this, otherwise amazing, theme...and elementary is back.

How can that be?
All sources, and PPAs of elementary are gone.
The script says: "The theme is already set to regular nautilus"
But still my "regular" nautilus looks and acts like the elementary nautilus. and I didn't do anything except installing the theme

in that case, how did elementary re-appear then?

I had it installed a few months ago, but then reverted back to the default nautilus.
I removed all traces of elementary, but when I installed this theme is was suddenly back again.
And this is indeed strange...but I don't understand how to get the default back again.

It's an amazing theme!

At least you can check the PPA, and you'll see that there aren't packages for nautilus elementary and the elegant-gnome packages don't depend on the nautilus elementary. To install it you have to manually add the nautilus elementary PPA and install the package from there.

The only thing that comes to mind, you have removed the nautilus elementary package previously, but you haven't removed the nautilus elementary ppa from the sources list. And when you ran the "sudo apt-get upgrade" command during the elegant-gnome installation, you have updated the nautilus to elementary automatically. So the solution for you is to remove the nautilus elementary package and don't forget to remove the nautilus elementary ppa from the sources list.

It seems the script installed nautilus elementary against my wish...
and whatever I try, I can't get rid of it.
I tried the config script, I tried all sorts of methods found on the internet.

When I use the script it says the default Nautilus is being used, which is not the case.

Any ideas?

Script does NOT install anything. The installation of the Nautilus Elementary is optional and this is your choise to install it or not. In the "Configure Nautilus" menu entry you just change the style for the nautilus in gtk theme. The GTK theme is preconfigured to use with the regular Nautilus. If you've installed the Nautilus Elementary, so you have to choose the "Configure Nautilus -> Nautilus Elementery" menu entry.

i use the main menu applet icon instead of the usual application menu to save space. when i did this the icon was the gnome foot. since i do not like feet on my desktop, anywhere, i changed it by this method:
"If you want to change the MAIN-MENU icon, use gconf-editor, go to
apps > panel > objects
and find the object with object_type : menu-object, select use_custom_icon and insert in the custom_icon field the position/name of your icon."
- which happens to be in the folder "/usr/share/icons/Elegant-AwOken/clear/22x22/start-here/"

just wanted to let people know.

Thanks for the great theme, everything almost works, except i have noticed on certain sites for example amaxon.com, the text box/forms/search fields on the site still uses white background with white text, i have been searching for a way to fix this, anyone have any recommendations.
The elegant theme for chromium/google chrome is not affected by this bug btw.

Check if you have the userContent.css file in the ~/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/chrome directory. If not, go to /usr/share/themes/Elegant-GTK and copy the userContent.css file into ~/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/chrome and restart the Firefox. If you have this file and still got the problems, open the Help and follow the instructions. ( And if you'll decide to use the instructions mentioned in the Help, don't forget to remove the userChrome.css file from ~/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/chrome)

This theme easily should be in the 90% range, it works great, looks great and everything is, well GREAT!

What's there not to like? You tell me!

Just need an icon for the Eye of Gnome I see missing....
