It would be more useful to post the answer where others with the same question can see it.

USUALLY all you need to do is open Appearance Properties in the system/settings menu on the main panel and drag-n-drop the downloaded .tar.gz file onto the appearance properties window.

SOMETIMES this isn't the case, such as these scenarios:

1) The tar.gz isn't split properly. 90% of themes here ARE split properly. However, some posters bundle multiple theme pieces together. You would need to fix this yourself, using other working themes as a sample or ask the author to fix it. Drag-n-drop in this case will say the file is invalid.

2) You need another GTK Engine installed. If drag-n-drop goes okay but you select your theme and see a nag in the window about a missing engine, just open your local package manager (often Synaptic Package Manager) and search for / install the one it's nagging about, it may be easily available.

Extra info:

1) You need to be using Gnome (default on Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian usually). Suse, Pclinuxos, kubuntu, etc use KDE 3/4 instead.

2) There are 'themes' and 'gtk themes'. Themes show up in the appearance window itself, and include lots of stuff: gtk theme, icons, etc etc. Others are just gtk themes, which will show up in the list if you click 'custom'.

3) Sometimes a log-out & log-in is necessary for the theme to show up properly. Rarely.

4) Sometimes the author mentions in the description what engine(s) is(are) needed, and if a special version is needed.

5) If you see a missing engine nag that doesn't actually give a name, it just says it's missing "", it's *probably* not an issue. Just log out and in again, see your luck.
