the transparent windows are managed through transset and xcompmgr. you just need the composite extension in xorg.
there are packages for that in ubuntu.
But I use them only for screenshots. It is not fast enough yet.

first one is for ubuntu (speaks only about xcompmgr) and the second one is for gentoo. the second one has info about transset.

well, I don't have much experience in blender, I made only a couple or more things with it. so thank you for the good critism :)
Perhaps I will update this one, and also post another background from a different angle.
