I love how the flames came out in this. You should try out some complex fractal work. I'd be interesting in looking at the creations.

Also, which plasmoid is that on your desktop that displays your hardware components?

I used a superkaramba widget. BuildMon4 to be exact. It's well documented to make it work with your system.

Interesting idea.
Putting the optical flare in the middle sets off both the whorls and itself. Either thing by itself wouldn't work.

But I gotta ask...what are the whorls made of? They look really neat. Very unfamiliar.

It was very easy. I started with a star background and then added the supernova with 225 spikes (center flare), added a new transparent layer and then used the flame filter (filters, render, nature, flames) to add in each of the whorls (in this background, I used 3 different ones). Each are on their own transparent layer. I then flattened the visible layers and saved it.
