SmoothGNOME-purple ported to the glide engine

13 years ago

Is the menuitem the only diff between the smooth and glide engine? That's the only diff I see. I love the smooth engine but another 'engine' just to have a glassy menuitem (which is horrible for the purpose of the smooth engine) is pretty silly when it could have easily been added to the smooth engine. Any reason it wasn't done that way? I haven't kept up with it and maybe there's a reason behind it but I can't imagine what that would be.

Smooth Engine != Glider Engine

The Smooth engine is a highly configurable GDK based engine. it doesn't look like Glider, Glider used to use it to look like itself. (Smooth can look like redmond, thinice, etc)

The new Glider engine is a cairo based engine, which for now, is just the fixed look for the Glider Theme. It was created because realistically, Smooth cannot be ported to Cairo.

The Glossy menu items were an idea, an example of cairo changes, which people liked, there are actually quite many other difference between Smooth based Glider, but that is the only major visual difference (compare radio items, and check items for other slightly less obvious visual differences)

In the long run, Glider is intended to replace Smooth, as a cairo based configurable engine, but that is just an idea for now. Not enough people seem to care about configurable engines for me to.

Thanks for the detailed reply!

How can you say they don't look the same? In detail sure there are a few differences but the overall look at a glance is the same. It's like saying clearlooks and clearlooks-cairo don't look the same.

Why can't Smooth be ported to Cairo? Just curious, I don't see any reason to port Smooth. It has no need for Cairo.

Yes, I like the radio and check buttons!

I realize I am bias because I can config them, but I love configurable engines, which is why I love the Smooth Engine. If I could only have one engine, it would be Smooth.
