1. Go to terminal and type:
gconf-editor
2. There, go to /apps/gnome-session/options/spash_image and put the path where you have saved this file (or whatever other image you might want use in the future).
Easier way:
1. Use your preferred package manager (aptitude, apt-get, Adept, Synaptic, etc.) and install gnome-splashscreen-manager
2. After installed, go to System --> Preferences --> Splash Screen

I already have your Ubuntu-Smooth GDM theme installed and there's nothing in it that I don't like - it's perfect.
I like the splash screen very much too, but it would be great if you could do a version with a smaller Ubuntu logo and perhaps presented in 2D form, as the one in the GDM version. I would propably install it for many people who I help with installing and using Ubuntu.
