Description:

Plastikfox is a theme for Mozilla Firefox to make it have the same look as the KDE programs with the Plastik style and the Crystal SVG 1.0 icon set.

ABOUT THE OK AND CANCEL BUTTONS: Firefox 1.5 doesn't have OK and Cancel buttons anymore in the Options dialog but it's possible to enable them again. Just write "about:config" in the address bar, search for the key "browser.preferences.instantApply" and set it to false. The OK and Cancel buttons should be there back again.

BUTTON ORDER: You can reverse the button order in the dialog boxes so they are like in the other KDE applications. Simply click "Reverse button order" to install a patch to activate this feature.

COLOR SCHEME: Plastikfox doesn't follow the KDE color scheme. Remember it's just a theme for Firefox, so it's impossible to do it. It's made with the 'Plastik' color scheme. If you want to change the color scheme you'll have to modify the theme manually. :(

Thanks to Everaldo for his Crystal SVG icon sets. You can get them at:

-------------------------------------
HOW TO INSTALL
-------------------------------------

If you have an older version of the theme, uninstall it before installing a new one.

· Extract the files anywhere you want
· Open the install.html file in Firefox (you don't need to be 'root')
· Click the "Install" button
· Accept when it prompts for the theme installation
· 'Tools' menu - Themes
· Select 'Plastikfox Crystal SVG' and click 'Use this theme'
· Restart Firefox (VERY IMPORTANT!)
· Enjoy!

If you want, you may delete the downloaded files once the theme is installed.

I've been told about this problem by other people too, but I have no idea on how to solve it. I was able to change the icon overwriting the one that had Firefox, but I haven't found anything in the theme related to this. Seems like that popup wasn't themeable because the look of the popup was in the code instead of in the theme. :S And if I'm wrong and it can be themed, I don't know how.

That's strange because it does look themed in other themes I've tried.

Oh well, it's no biggie anyway :)

It would be very useful for me if you tell me which themes do you mean and if you can send me a screenshot. This way I can download the themes and take a look at the code to see what have they done to theme it.

What a masterpiece! Being a long-time Phoenix/Firebird/Firefox user, I must say this is one of the best Fx themes that I've ever seen. I love the Plastik theme/decoration, so it's really the perfect match. I installed the Crystal SVG iconset to complete the new setting. Thanks for the great work!

I have a problem with the menus. Especially in the bookmarks.
First of all, I'm using the latest version on windows. I don't know if this problem also happens in Linux. When I go home I will test it in mi Linux.

When you have too many bookmarks, the subfolders opens to the right. Each subfolder opens until there's no more space. Once there's no more space, it opens to the left.

In windows at least, the menus overlap 3 millimeters. I think the effect is on purpose. The problem is that when it draws the menu towards the right it looks good, but when it draws towards the left it leaves a gap of space of the same 3 millimeters, making impossible to select those bookmarks.

In bookmarks, when you have many levels, or long names (for instance /work/development/java/some application, and inside bookmarks, with long descriptive names) it always shows to the left, and makes it impossible to use.

I know my English is not very good. I can send you screenshots, and explanation in Spanish if you didn't understand.

Greetings
Rocco.

It's made intentionally. In KDE, the menus overlap a few pixels like in the theme. But that has the side effect of what you say. I don't know very well how to avoid that problem without giving that effect. I'll try to see how to fix it. Meanwhile, you can try to create a file called "userChrome.css" and place it in your profile folder. You'll see there's already a file called "userChrome-example.css" in the directory where it should be, so you can search for it and place it in the same folder. The file should contain:

menupopup {
    margin: 0px;
}

That should be enough to remove that effect.

I see the same overlap/gap on Linux, but I can still choose the bookmarks opened to the left by simply moving the mouse cursor to the left. I doubt it's only possible with Linux. Am I missing something?

TEMPORARY FIX FOR THE PROBLEMS WITH TABBROWSER EXTENSIONS

I've taken the latest version of the Tabbrowser extensions (1.10.20040529) and made some changes that seem to fix a few of the problems related to Plastikfox when using them together. Please note this is just an experiment. I can't promise anything. It might or might not work for you. If it doesn't, please send me a detailed report about what does and what doesn't work with screenshots if possible. If it works for you, congratulations and enjoy it. ;) I'll accept any presents you'd like to send me. :D

Screenshot:
http://www.polinux.upv.es/mozilla/plastikfox/tabbrowser/plastikfox-tabbrowser.png

How to install it:
-----------------------
Locate a subdirectory called "chrome" inside the directory where you installed Firefox. Inside that directory you'll see there's a file called "tabextensions.jar". If you installed Tabbrowser extensions in your Firefox profile, you should search for that file inside "~/.phoenix/default/xxxxxxxx.slt/chrome". Replace that file with this one:
http://www.polinux.upv.es/mozilla/plastikfox/tabbrowser/tabextensions.jar

It's strongly recommended that you make a backup of that file first. You'll probably need root privileges to be able to work on it.

Restart Firefox and see if it works or not.

Hi,
I really love this theme. But I have a few problems. I've just installed the latest version, but there was no chcek box to change button order :-(
And the second problem is with Tabbrowser Extensions. With this extension enabled I have ugly tabs :-(

Any suggestion.

Thanks.

I know about the problem with Tabbrowser extensions but it's hard to solve inside the theme. It would be much easier to make a modified version of Tabbrowser extensions that works well with the theme. Let me finish my university exams and I'll try to make it. That means I'll start working on it in the beggining of july. You may read older comments for more information about this problem.

Hi, like the theme, and have used it since it came out. But there seems to be a problem with the drop down menus, on the forward and back buttons - the clickable area for the drop-down menus does not correspond well to the small black arrows, with unexpected results...

Good work though!

Very nice theme but, the tabs don't look right with the Tabbrowser Extensions.

It's probably a preblem with the extension, but it wouldn't hurt if you could take a look, I guess.

Even tough I really like that extension, I disabled it to use the theme....

I know about the problem with the Tabbrowser extensions and I've been looking for a way to solve it but I don't know very well how. The tabbrowser extensions bind the tab widget so what I say in the theme gets overriden. I think the only way to fix it is by making a modified version of the Tabbrowser extensions that overrides the tab widget in a way that it's still compatible with what I say in the theme. But right now I don't have the time to work on it, so unfortunately Plastikfox won't be compatible with the Tabbrowser extensions before I finish my university exams, which begin in 3 weeks and will end 30th june.

Really nice theme, just one thing. When I try to install it on Firefix 0.8 it just crashes. The only error message I get is "segmentation fault". Have tried both with Debians firefox and "the original".

Try to create a new profile. If you don't know how, just rename ~/.phoenix to ~/.phoenix-old or something, and then try again. You can also try to disable the "reverse button order" patch and install the theme without it. Then install the patch manually by copying the file patch/userChrome.css to ~/.phoenix/default/xxxxxxxx.slt/chrome. Please tell me if it works for you.

Could someone test the theme under Firebird 0.7 and tell me if it works? I've added support for it in the installer, but I don't have it so I can't test it.

I have my university exams in 3 weeks so I have to study and I can't work on it. I could take one or two hours to be done, but it's not hard. It requires a few steps:

· Take the .jar file and unzip it in a new directory.

· Open Konqueror and browse to "global/icons" inside that directory. Open another Konqueror window/tab/split the window and go to "/usr/share/icons/nuvola" or the place where your icons are installed.

· You'll find the directories and the file names match, so you just have to take each icon in the Nuvola icon set and overwrite the corresponding one in the Plastikzilla theme.

· Additionally, you could search for other icons in the other directories and replace them, but it's not necessary. There are some icons with the Crystal look that don't have the same name. You may replace them changing the name, edit the corresponding icon or whatever you want.

· You have to create the "disabled" icons. This is the hardest step. It's easy but requires a lot of time and is repetitive because you have to do the same thing with each icons. For that, search for the icons inside the "disabled" directory. You have to take each original icon in the Nuvola icon set and open it with GIMP. Add a layer mask and fill it with #707070 (112, 112, 112) so the icon looks translucent. Apply the mask and convert the image to grayscale. Then save it with the same name under the "disabled" directory overwriting the old Crystal one. It would be better to create a script for doing that because it's repetitive, but I don't know how. Maybe using ImageMagick to make the same effect, but I don't know.

· Edit the file "global/contents.rdf". Change the name "Plastikzilla Crystal SVG" to "Plastikzilla Nuvola" or whatever you want.

· Now zip it all in a new .jar file with the new name and install it. For that you can use the form at this page:

http://www.texturizer.net/firefox/themes/

It would be better if you do it all with plastikzilla-crystalsvg-1.3-1.4.jar because I have a PHP script to automatically generate the plastikzilla-crystalsvg-1.5-1.6.jar file and so we could publish the new theme here in KDE-Look.org. I can send it to you by e-mail.

Woops! I was thinking about Plastikzilla instead of Plastikfox. It's all the same but obviosly there's only one .jar file so you just have to work on it. There are a few other images with the same name, but it's better that you give me your e-mail address so I can send you the "devel" version of the theme, which contains a few bug fixes and improvements.
