Description:

The Tango Desktop Project aims to provide a uniform look and feel
to a given graphical user interface. This includes:

* The Icon Naming Specification
* Transitional icon naming utilities
* Standard icon style guidelines
* The base Tango Icon Library
* The Tango Icon Library extras

This is not your standard icon set. Some effort is required.

While the provided patches to KDE allow the icons in the icon contexts not used by KDE to become available, they are not absolutely necessary. The Tango icon theme will work, but any icons in these new contexts will not be visible in the UI.
I'm currently working on an install-able package, but I've yet to discover a way to have tar deal with symlinks when compressing the theme.

the patch is only to allow different icons naming "standard" ? why don't you make a shell script to rename the tango naming to kde naming ?
your method is called "overkill" : downloading heavy source files, compiling some monster program like kde. This is very complicated and stupid !

this is the future, newer versions of kde should natively support this naming scheme, but for the actual kde you have to patch in order to fully use the theme

can you please make a normal iconset for users that don't want to patch their kde just to use these icons.

Ya have to patch KDE just to install Window Decoration or "Style" themes.
This now completes the "KDE is a PITA to theme" saga. :-)

This icons archive(5Mb tar.bz2).

Works with gnome/kde-3.

Standart Gentoo build + some symlincs for use with kde-3(not everything).

Will be there until 26 Jan(i have no permanent host).

Is there any way to make a Gnome icon theme a KDE one? I mean without doing it manually.

No conversions necessary (for GNOME users that is).

Surely that can be done for KDE as well

Hmm, I'll take a look at that theme. However, what's bothering me is Gnome doesn't have the same issue with icon contexts that KDE has. Gnome will happily search from the top directory of an icon theme for a given icon name regardless of the icon context. KDE on the other hand hard-codes and validates each icon context. So I'd still need to ask everyone to patch KDE, otherwise Crystal icons show up all over.

You've just hit my biggest peeve with KDE on the head. Why they had to make themeing so difficult is beyond me.

GNOME has that right for sure.

Drag and drop your icon, widget or window decoration theme tarball onto the open themes applet or extract it into your ~/.themes or ~/.icons directory.

No muss no fuss...

...no ./configure, no make, no make install, no dpkg -i. no rpm -ivh. No Synaptic, Kynaptic, No Kpackage, No Adept, No YAST, No Red Carpet, KYUM, urpmi, emerge. Yumex...

I don't get the sense of all this. Where is the difference between this and an ordinary icon theme? Installation is way to fiddly and the screenshots don't prove the uniform look that tango wants to archieve. Still some crystal icons there :-) And as some others said - they don't fit into the KDE look&feel. Anyway, your work is nice but more suitable for gnome or maybe xfce.

How is it more suitable for GNOME or XFCE?

As some others already said, these icons are too dark resp. colorless to fit in an colourful desktop environment like KDE, keeping in mind that this is good work. Bur remember - it's just my personal taste and not the 11th commandment :-)

The idea is nice. But the provided icons are horribly trist grey and somewhat colorless (as if someone put a greyish mask over the icons) and don't match KDE but rather Gnome.

How do you "match KDE" with icons?

The set has both GNOME and KDE icons in it.

Did you notice which utility did the conversion from SVG to PNG? The rsvg utility from a recent version of librsvg is preferred, as stated in the post. If the conversion is done by ksvgtopng, the resulting PNGs look terrible. I guess I'm going to have to create an installable tarball to avoid this and other bugs caused by poor support for the SVG format.

I've just attempted to create an install-able theme, but it's not working out. I haven't given up, though. I'll try again soon, time permitting.

but this is not difficult enough to install. Could you please make it more so and then get back to us?

Thanks.

They look great with Gnome but they don't look the same with KDE. They have CARTOONS like look which does not fit with the shiny look of KDE. However, they are one of the best icons outthere.

I agree. I like what I see, but I've downloaded the icon file for use with an open source project on os x, and I have folders with a few icons and lots of 4KB "alias" files. Does anyone know where I can get a full set of real icons?

Why cant this be distributed like a standard icon pack. a gz file.
Why do we have to configure and make.
I like the icons but the large folder icons could use some more work.
The 16x16 icons look neat ... the part i like the best.

Agree. Should be simple to install using KDE Control Center as well as in Gnome, as most of the other isoc packages do.

Uniform look and feel is a good thing but it doesn't have to be this ugly. Hate Gnome and its C**p.

yes, i hate this dark icon-themes, too. why isnt thre any project to make the colorful crystal-icons better?! the crystal-icons should be standart-named and should have a uniform style!

Report

I gotta hand it to them. It's 10X easier to install icons there than in KDE (no pocket protector required).

With that said...

"./configure --prefix=some-path" isn't gonna fly.

I need specifics. WHAT path are you speaking of? The path to the folder where my other KDE icons are installed?
